Job Overview
The AFRL Materials and Manufacturing Directorate seeks to hire a motivated and experienced mid-level scientist/engineer to serve as a member of a dynamic and interdisciplinary researchers in the Polymer Matrix Composites Branch (RXNP) of the Composite, Ceramic, Metallic, and Materials Performance Division (RXN). This post closes at 1600 hours on 3 September 2024.
Position duties include, but are not limited to:
Leads development of experimental characterization and modeling of fiber reinforced composites (FRCs) as a member of the Composites Performance Research Team
Evaluates performance of novel composite variants including additively manufactured composites and multifunctional composites
Develops fundamental understanding of the response of composite materials in application-relevant environments across length scales pertinent to life limiting damage mechanisms
Develops a portfolio strategy, identifies cross-team and interdisciplinary intramural partnering opportunities
Manages extramural programs to advance polymer and FRC technologies
Interacts and develops partnerships with government, industrial and academic partners, as well as exploring and establishing international partnerships
Communicates findings to the technical community and enables transition of technology to industry and DoD users
This position will be filled at the DR-2 (GS-11-12 equivalent) or DR-3 (GS-14 equivalent) level and is located at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. This position may be filled as a 5-year Flexible Length Term appointment (new government hires, current government term employees, etc.) with the option to later extend or convert to a permanent appointment.

Required Qualifications
- US Citizenship
- Possess a professional science or engineering (S&E) degree, in a relevant technical field, from an accredited (or ABET accredited for engineering) academic institution; if the highest earned S&E degree is a Bachelor's, the applicant must also have one year of experience at the DR-01 (GS-11 equivalent) level to be hired as a DR-02 and one year of specialized experience as a DR-02 (GS-13) to be hired as a DR-03.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
- This is an Acquisition Professional Development Program (APDP) position requiring Level II certification in the Science and Technology Manager (N) functional stall. Applicants must list all completed APDP certifications on resume. Selectee will have 24 months to meet the APDP certification requirements for the position.
Desired Qualifications
- Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in a relevant technical field (materials science engineering, polymer science/engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or related fields), from an ABET accredited academic institution
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Team-oriented approach
- Strong background in materials research, experimental characterization, and modeling of fiber reinforced composites (FRCs)
- Strong background in program management, to include setting project requirements and executing technical, cost, and schedule objectives
- Awareness or experience with materials, process, and testing specifications and standards, as well as composites certification processes
