The National Alzheimers Coordinating Center (NACC) facilitates collaborative research among approximately 35 Alzheimer's Disease Centers (ADCs) funded by the National Institute on Aging, based on a 5-yr funding cycle with a budget of approximately $36M. NACC maintains a database of clinical and neuropathological data collected from the ADCs, and also funds and oversees investigator - initiated collaborative research projects among ADC investigators; these projects define and collect data specific for their research needs. In addition, NACC provides data management and statistical consulting/analysis for investigator-initiated collaborative R01s which are independently funded by the NIA.
The Research Scientist/Engineer 4(E S UAW RSE) is integral to the success of NACC, and it is vital that the person occupying this position possesses the ability to work with ADC and non-ADC investigators and other personnel from diverse backgrounds (i.e.,neurology, neuropathology, psychiatry, genetics, computer analysts, administrators) and multiple institutions. This will be a very visible position that will lead the NACC Research Support Group and involve interacting with scientists across the country, reflecting the outstanding quality of research at the University of Washington.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages all aspects of NACC's Research Support Group.
Works in close collaboration with interdisciplinary groups within and outside of NACC consisting of computer programmers, statisticians, scientists, study coordinators, and other key partners to accomplish the work of the Research Support Group.
Serves as a liaison, presenting on behalf of NACC at local meetings and international conferences.
Engages key partners to drive strategic goals; Contributes to the thinking around shifts and the evolution of the strategy based on new information from key partners and new/emerging initiatives.
Provides support as a thought partner to faculty and staff leadership in translating goals into plans and deliverables that align staff time and strategic direction of the organization.
Champions equity, diversity, and inclusion, and anti-discrimination practices and polices.
Personnel Management
Directly supervises all staff in the Research Support Group (i.e., Research Scientists and Research Consultants); setting annual performance goals for professional development while factoring NACC's annual programmatic and project goals; meeting regularly with staff to promote and monitor work.
Runs weekly RSG team meetings to set goals, monitor progress, and remove barriers to success.
Hires, onboards, and trains all direct reports.
Meets with leadership to facilitate synergy and alignment with center related goals and work.
Ongoing Operations Management
Oversees NACC's data request and consultation program.
Uses in-depth knowledge of the complexities of NACC data to provide consultation to hundreds of investigators annually through direct consultation, overseeing RSG staff consultants, and promotion and support of self-service tools.
Promotes efficiency and productivity by providing leadership and support in process development and improvement, implementation, analysis, reporting and change management.
Oversees progress tracking of all research projects using NACC data from requests through to project completion, including publication tracking and compliance.
Facilitates data QA/QC processes and procedures for NACC datasets.
Produces special and recurring reports as needed.
Project Management
Assumes oversight of all projects related to forms and module development (i.e., creation and content revision of data collection instructions) including serving as the primary points-of-contact with the ADRC Clinical Task Force and form-specific work groups.
Leads and advises on projects aimed to develop new systems to improve user experiences (Query System, Website redesign, Reporting Services, self-service tools - i.e., Leaf).
Research Project Management
Works with research faculty and staff scientists to set goals and timelines for research initiatives.
Connects RSG staff to NACC faculty and external investigators to foster collaborative research projects.
Provides mentorship to RSG staff on research project aims, analytical plans, and interpretation of results.
Independently and in collaboration with NACC faculty and investigators across the country, initiates and conducts applied and methodologic/statistical research using the NACC database. This includes proposing topics, analyzing data, and preparing manuscripts for submission to scientific journals.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Master's degree in Public Health or related field.
At least 4 years of experience with data management, data collection design as well as manuscript preparation, other research project duties, and staff supervision.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work under deadline pressure and ability to work both independently and as a member of team.
Strong project management skills and ability to prioritize work to meet internally and externally imposed deadlines.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Strong interest in Alzheimer's Disease and related disorders.
Experience with SAS and R for data analysis and file manipulation.
Experience with REDCap and Leaf in addition to R and SAS.
