The Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Health Center is committed to promoting research. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life of those living with diabetes, to find a cure for diabetes and to help us answer important questions about diabetes.
The Research RN plays a vital role in supporting diabetes research at the Harold Schnitzer Diabetes Center . The Research Nurse will be responsible to ensure research integrity and compliance with institutional policies, state and federal regulations, and Guidelines to Good Clinical Practice and will obtain and maintain all certfifications required for human subjects research (e.g. CITI). This position will be responsible for assisting the research team with research management of study patients enrolled onto various studies. The candidate will have experience in all aspects related to clinical research studies and trials and will be involved in a broad spectrum of tasks to support research studies that include but are not limited to: overseeing patient screening, recruitment, facilitating characterization and coordination and scheduling of assessments visits, and monitoring, regulatory issues, including IRB documentation and adverse event reporting, data entry, quality control of the data, preparing and maintaining IRB submissions and other regulatory approvals as pertinent to each studies, will be flexible in learning procedures as pertinent to performing clinical studies pertinent to diabetes and complications ( e.g. use of diabetes technologies, glycemic clamps, autonomic testing, skin biopsies, vibration perception), venipuncture and flebotomy, biosamples collection, processing and storing acoording to various protocols, diagnostic tests requiring administering iv ( e.g iohexol clearance) , infusions, learn advanced EHR data mining for identifying eligible participants, Red Cap data base creation and maintenenance, as well as performing and training other members of the study in any aspects of a clinical protocol, developing/coordinating research orders, developing as needed and following standard operating procedures (SOPs), assist with pre-study planning,. This position will manage several aspects of the diabetes research studies and duties may vary on an as needed basis.

Function/Duties of Position
- Oversees and assists in following all aspects associated with clinical research and assuring adherence to the highest standards of human subjects research (Good Clinical and adherence to each clinical study protocol of care for subjects involved in Diabetes Research at the OHSU.
- Identifies potential study subjects, initiates protocol screening and verifies eligibility for study enrollment. Participates in the informed consent process by providing detailed subject and family information of the appropriate protocol.
- Functions as a primary nurse for specific study population(s). Under the direction of a credentialed provider, the research nurse is responsible for evaluating current diagnostic information, ordering diagnostic tests and study medications to ensure protocol adherence, therapeutic interventions, sample acquisition, documentation of protocol variances and completion of accurate and complete research documentation.
- Conducts telephone triage for lab/symptom assessment, information, therapeutic intervention, and appropriate follow-up for protocol patients.
- Performs specific procedures appropriate to the research population including but not limited to venipunctures.
- Reinforces subject and family information regarding treatment options, specific drug administration, test/procedure aspects, and expected toxicity management.
- Coordinates the dispensing of study medications in accordance with research protocol.
- Collaborates with nursing colleagues and other members of the health care team to ensure optimal care of study subjects.
- Collaborates with entire research team to effectively manage all requirements of a research study. Provides team with standardize nursing/documentation tools as needed. Assists with CRF completion
- Reports or triggers adverse events reporting in a timely fashion as required by specific research study, OHSU policy and federal regulations.
- Participates in review of study protocols, in collaboration with principal investigator and other study staff members, to determine study feasibility.
- Provides appropriate documentation of study encounters in source document.
Professional and Coordination Responsibilities:
- Attend team meetings and conferences
- Participate in organizational and process improvement working groups for optimal research nursing practices
- Other duties as assigned by management
Training/Mentoring of OHSU team members
- Facilitates development and mentoring of clinic and research teams
- Participate in mentoring program of nurses
- Provide subject matter, expertise as appropriate and required.
Required Qualifications
- BSN
- 3-5 years of relevant experience
- Ability to prioritize multiple tasks at one time
- Must have excellent communication, analytical and organizational skills: both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team while being collaborative in resolving problems.
- Must be proficient with computers running Windows and PC applications e.g. MS Excel, Oracle, Access, Word and PowerPoint).
- Must have demonstrated excellent customer service skills both on the phone and in person.
- Must possess energy and drive to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships.
- Active Oregon RN License
- Active Basic Life Support Certification
Preferred Qualifications
- MSN
- Clinical care experience.
- Clinical trials and/or research experience
- Familiarity with EPIC and other research platforms and databases.
- OHSU Clinical Research experience
- Inpatient clinical experience
- SOCRA or ACRP certified,
- OCN certified
- Active Basic Life Support Certification
