The Department of Chemistry seeks a Research Scholar to manage, under minimal supervision, all facets of the research group of Professor Mircea Dinca involving the design, discovery, and utilization of new materials for energy and environmental applications. The position will involve research, technical and administrative responsibilities. This includes writing and preparation of grant proposals, scientific editing, organization of scientific information, project and financial management, managing interactions with collaborators and funding agencies (i.e., preparing interim reports and presentations, progress reports, project plans, coordination of meetings, transfer of deliverables). This includes PI and Co-PI status on grants and the ability to fund or partially fund this position is integral. Additional responsibilities include managing spending on federal and corporate sponsored grants, and unrestricted research funding; proposal and budget development, and coordinating sponsored research and other grant submissions; laboratory and instrument maintenance, including training new academic personnel on lab-specific equipment; interfacing with other facilities on campus and at National user facilities; securing competitive funding to support independent research; designing, developing, and leading independent research projects (more specifically in the field of usage of porous materials to tackle environmental applications and to study fundamental chemical phenomena); presenting research at conferences and scientific meetings, as well as collaborating with researchers at and external to Princeton University, to foster innovation. CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES *Financial duties include managing a budget and collaboration with the financial administrator for budget oversight and resolution of financial issues. *Lab maintenance/management includes maintaining lab supplies/inventory, instruments, equipment; training new users; ensuring safety guidelines are met; managing vendor relations, service contracts, and purchasing of new large equipment. *Financial duties include managing a budget, ordering and receiving of purchases, collaborating with the financial administrator for budget oversight and resolution of financial issues. *Personnel management will include serving as a resource to all lab personnel; organizing of group activities and events; coordinating visits of researchers from industry and academia; providing guidance, training on general lab operations, support and mentorship to undergraduate, graduate students, and postdocs. *Serves as primary resource for lab member on research techniques, taking responsibility for complex tasks without direct supervision. Responsible for supervising staff, onboarding new staff to the lab and input in performance reviews of staff. Other duties as required. Qualifications & Skills Essential Qualifications: Candidates must hold a Ph.D., have working knowledge of general laboratory equipment and materials, and at least 5 years' experience in an academic, research or nonprofit environment; Preferred Qualifications: the ability to work independently within a team environment; have excellent organizational, record-keeping, project management, and verbal and written communication skills. In addition, candidates must be self-motivated, with excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, the ability to supervise others, and exercise discretion and diplomacy. This is a 3-year term position starting August 1, 2025, though the start date is flexible. The work location for this position is in-person on campus at Princeton University.
