About the Role:
We are seeking a Research Scientist 1, Biology (12-month term) to join our team. The Research Scientist 1, Biology will contribute to and deliver on assigned drug discovery projects to ensure requirements are met and analysis is conducted, in addition to developing new approaches and assays/techniques. They will also develop, validate, implement, and complete ex-vivo assays/experiments; design and execute electrophysiological recordings to assess cellular and network level changes in various disease models.
This position reports to the Senior Research Scientist, Biology and will be in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The level of the position will be commensurate with the candidate's education and industry experience. This role is a hybrid position, requiring a minimum of 2 days per week in the office.

QUALIFICATIONS:
The base salary range for this role is $77,000 $95,600 CAD; we will consider above this range for exceptional candidates. Base salary is determined by a combination of factors including, but not limited to, education and other qualifications, years of relevant experience, and internal equity.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Contribute to and deliver on assigned drug discovery projects to ensure requirements are met and analysis is conducted, in addition to developing new approaches and assays/techniques as needed.
- Develop, validate, implement, and complete ex-vivo assays/experiments; design and execute electrophysiological recordings to assess cellular and network level changes in various disease models.
- Conduct immunohistochemistry and microscopy on nervous tissue to support understanding of potential drug targets
- Interact and collaborate with other functions and colleagues within Discovery to provide status and project updates.
- Review research and scientific data and report discrepancies to other scientists and colleagues as required.
- Coordination and documentation of datasets to support internal decision making as well as external publications and regulatory filings.
- Report writing, documentation, and presentations including detailed write-ups of functions and capabilities of newly developed analysis toolboxes and scientific protocols
- Critically evaluate scientific literature, integrate new information into existing knowledge base, and identify gaps for new investigation.
- May increase Xenon's scientific reputation through external presentations and publications as needed to support the corporate goals.
- Keep up to date and detailed records of experiments and data analysis within an Electronic Lab Notebook system. Ensure experiments are counter-signed on a monthly basis.
- Ensure the laboratory environment is safe and well-organized; follow and keep up to date with Health & Safety policies
- Act in accordance with Company policies, including, for example, the Code of Business Conduct and Ethics, and ensure policies are understood and followed by direct reports, if any.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in Neuroscience or Pharmacology or related field; industry experience is preferred but not required.
- Previous hands-on experience with brain slices and electrophysiology, microscopy and immunohistochemistry, are essential
- Knowledge in the study of neurophysiology, ion channel physiology and synaptic plasticity
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, adapting to differing audiences
- Demonstrates scientific creativity, initiative, and collaboration across cross-functional teams
- Excellent record keeping and attention to detail
- Ability to adapt to rapidly changing projects and priorities
