The College of Education, seeks to fill a Research Scientist in the areas of coaching education and play equity. Reporting to the Center for Leadership in Athletics (CLA) Director, the Research Scientist will possess an understanding of the national landscape of youth sports with specific knowledge of coach training, national and regional policy, and issues of access and equity across sport. The successful candidate will have extensive experience conducting qualitative and quantitative research on athletics, education, and coaching. This position requires familiarity with Ambitious Coaching and other internationally recognized research-based frameworks for coach development.

The Research Scientist will play a central role in establishing the research agenda for the CLA. Strategies and findings from this portfolio of work may be used to contribute to the broader field, in addition to the Ambitious Coaching Certification, the Intercollegiate Athletic Leadership M.Ed. program and undergraduate courses in sports and education.

In support of this effort the Research Scientist duties will include, but not be limited to, the following:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as Principal and Co-Principal Investigator (Co-PI) on research projects
  • Write grants and develop, oversee, and execute research activities
  • Establishes a national network for research connections and funding sources
  • Responsible for acquisition of research funding to support CLA initiatives and projects
  • Write and collaborate on publications in nationally recognized journals and outlets
  • Coordinate research efforts across internal and external teams to increase efficiency and quality
  • Provides mentorship and training for CLA research staff
  • Develop research-practice partnerships through the CLA
  • Drives CLA research strategy and long-term planning, including the construction of a strategic plan for research and regional and national partnerships
  • Establishes new and novel lines of inquiry within the coaching and play equity space leading to new concepts, processes, and structures
  • Draws on a broad array of research techniques and approaches to explore complex and multi-faceted problems of practice
  • Collaborate with the College of Education Dean's Office to ensure that all research projects conform to institutional and departmental policies and regulations
  • Other potential duties as assigned
    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Ph.D. in Education, Policy, or a similar field
  • Five years of experience in Coaching Education Research.
    Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to lead teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information to both academic and non-academic audiences.
  • Ability to work independently with no oversight required and as an integral member of a team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to handle confidential and sensitive information in an appropriate manner.
  • Experience in strategic planning, particularly in the construction of an innovative research agenda and implementation goals.
  • Demonstrated experience in increasing organizational efficiency and meeting established goals and outputs.
  • Demonstrated track record of acquisition of research funding and grant project management, with an understanding of funding sources across the field.
  • Established practitioner and scholar network in the coaching and play equity space.
    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A deep expertise in equitable research-practice partnerships, play equity, and coaching education.
  • Multi-year experience in developing, managing, and facilitating professional learning for coaches and educators.
  • Multi-year managing a research team, including mentorship and oversight of researchers and scholars.
  • Ability to innovate in the area of youth sports research with university departments, direct service providers, policy makers, and other collaborators.
  • Ability to provide new and innovative approaches in coaching and sports research in response to complex assignments.
  • Independently applies a wide range of knowledge and research approaches from prior research portfolio and emerging areas of inquiry.
  • Knowledge of the research space in coaching and education and connections to leading scholars.
