The Department of Global Health has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 3 to join their team.
The Department of Global Health was established in 2007, bridging the schools of Medicine and Public Health, with a mandate to harness the expertise and interdisciplinary power of all UW schools and colleges. Our mission is to improve health for all through research, education, training, and service; to understand and address the causes of disease and health inequities at multiple levels; and to collaborate with partners to develop and sustain locally-led, quality health systems, programs and policies. Driven by tremendous interest among both students and faculty, the Department has grown to more than 400 graduate students and hundreds more undergraduates. We have more than 380 faculty and 1,000 staff working on projects across 130 countries with our deepest ties in United States, Kenya, Uganda, Peru, Mozambique, India, South Africa, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Nicaragua. POSITION PURPOSE
The purpose of the research project(s) is to determine mechanisms by which herpesviruses and HIV infection, or HIV exposure, contribute to poor health in women and children, and to develop novel interventions to improve health of women and children. The research projects are conducted in Kenya, in collaboration with investigators at the University of Nairobi and Kenyatta National Hospital. This is a permanent position. This is a fully functional, professional researcher position that exercises substantial independence with minimal supervision. The Research Scientist will collaborate with UW and International Collaborators to design and execute research studies of high public health impact, using standardized and novel scientific and analytic techniques. The worksite is the Hans Rosling Center for Population Health (HRC). This position regularly exercises discretion, good judgement and independent decision-making authority. The position requires the ability to work in a dynamic, diverse and collaborative environment, and to lead multiple projects and analyses simultaneously. The Research Scientist will contribute to impactful scientific discoveries that advance the mission and reputation of the UW.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Research Project Design and Grant Writing (20%)
Identifies key challenges in Global Health, and proposes solutions to address those gaps, and expand knowledge.
Leads writing of grant proposals and contributes to collaborative grant proposals led by others.
Submits grants to federal and non-federal sponsors.
Supports students and international collaborators in writing and improving research proposals.
Networks with external practice partners (foundations, institutes) and sponsors (NIH, pharma) to explore and develop new funding streams for the team's collaborative research projects.
Data Analysis, Management and Capacity Building (20%)
Applies advanced statistical methods to answer research questions.
Manages large study databases and inventories.
Conducts sampling and supports the collaborative team on sample size analyses and development of statistical analysis plans.
Partners effectively with collaborators in the US, Kenya, and elsewhere to accomplish research objectives.
Innovates new approaches to strengthening research partnerships, building research capacity at DGH and partner institutions.
Manuscript Writing, Results Dissemination, and Service (20%)
Leads, and contributes to the writing of research papers, commentaries, reviews and reports.
Disseminates findings at stakeholder meetings, scientific conferences, and other media.
Delivers guest lectures.
Participates in manuscript and grant reviews.
Works with policymakers and other experts to share knowledge and accelerate research findings into practice.
Project Management & Operations (20%)
Leads and manages long-term research projects with a high level of independence.
Creates, monitors and implements effective plans; takes lead for scoping tasks/projects; assembles and leads research team members.
Practices strong cross-cultural communications skills to effectively lead international teams.
Supervision and Mentoring (20%)
Supervises and mentors' trainees in the US and Kenya to develop and complete research projects, analyses, and capstones.
Leads training sessions for international staff in the conduct of research.
Mentors staff or students in development of technical, project and analysis skills.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or related field and four years of experience with herpesviruses, virome, and HIV studies infection in women and children.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
PhD in Epidemiology or a similar field. Content expertise in pediatric HIV and herpesvirus coinfectoins. Bioinformatics and analysis skills for analyzing virome/microbiome data using R. Existing collaborative research networks; experience working with international investigators to establish and manage longitudinal birth cohorts in Kenya. Strong cross-cultural communication skills and ability to apply principles of decolonization to their work.
