The Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) maintains an internationally recognized research program with three research areas (operations, applied statistics and production systems, and human factors and ergonomics) and research applications in health care, transportation and manufacturing). ISE prepares students for careers in a diverse and dynamically global environment, by providing them with the skills to foster a sustainable and safe future. Students learn to take a systems approach to problem solving and to recognize the larger societal impact of each engineering decision. The Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering has an outstanding opportunity for a permanent in-person on campus Research Scientist/Engineer 3 position.
The Research Scientist/Engineer 3 will lead and support the research programs directed by Prof. Juming Tang on advanced thermal processing technologies using microwave and radio frequency energy for different applications. The successful candidate will be a technical lead in microwave system design, computer simulation, scaling up, experimentation. The hired person will help support collaborations with industry, develop technical reports for project annual reviews, write manuscripts for publication and identify funding opportunities and write proposals for continued support to the research program. The hired person will also help supervise junior research scientists, graduate students, and technicians, monitor project activities, maintain confidentiality of data, and interact regularly with the technical and administrative points of contact of the sponsoring organization.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Conducting research, including engineering design, experimentation, knowledge dissemination
Design and build pilot-scale microwave systems
Conducting laboratory and pilot-scale research experiments
Develop and validate a simulation modeling system for operations of microwave heating systems
Manage secure data storage, access, and processing
Report the research progress to the supervisor regularly and as needed.
Develop research reports, making presentations at scientific conferences, and prepare manuscripts for publications in scientific journals.
Assist developing IP disclosures and patent applications.
Managing and supervising laboratory activities:
Lead and coordinate project activities with other team members to meet the project milestones
Assisting the development of research infrastructures and laboratory spaces.
Manage equipment inventories and experimental devices.
Provide training and mentorship to graduate students, junior technical assistants, visiting scholars and others.
Serving liaison with collaborators.
Organize group meetings.
Interact and collaborate across the university.
Seeking funding for future research
Actively seek external funding opportunities relevant to the research programs.
Assist in writing proposals.
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in Engineering
Four years of engineering or research experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Strong communication skills
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
PhD. in Food Engineering, Microwave Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Related engineering field
Experience in QuickWaves, COMSOL, and/or other simulation software/languages
Strong record in publishing scientific papers, making technical presentations, and in technical writing
Strong background in food processing technologies, thermal processing
Excellent team work experience and leadership skills.
