Summary

The Safety Director is a strategic leader responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing Clarkson Construction Company's comprehensive safety program across all operations. This role is accountable for ensuring regulatory compliance, promoting a proactive safety culture, and leading initiatives that drive continuous improvement in health and safety performance. The Safety Director provides leadership to safety personnel and collaborates closely with executive leadership, project managers, and field teams.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic direction for the company's safety program and lead the development and enforcement of safety policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other federal, state, and local safety regulations.
  • Oversee the execution of job site safety audits, inspections, and risk assessments; analyze findings and implement corrective actions.
  • Lead major incident response efforts, including investigations, root cause analysis, and development of prevention strategies.
  • Collaborate with executive and project leadership to integrate safety into the planning and execution of all projects.
  • Mentor, manage, and develop a team of safety professionals across multiple job sites.
  • Design and deliver advanced safety training programs for employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Analyze safety performance metrics, report findings to leadership, and develop strategic initiatives based on trends and data.
  • Oversee contractor and subcontractor safety compliance and ensure alignment with Clarkson Construction's safety standards.
  • Manage corporate safety documentation, including injury logs, training records, inspection reports, and safety certifications.
  • Oversee pre-employment and ongoing compliance processes such as drug testing, background checks, and safety certifications.
  • Foster a culture of safety awareness, accountability, and engagement throughout the organization.
  • Stay informed of industry best practices and emerging safety technologies to continuously evolve the company's safety program.
  • Represent Clarkson Construction in safety-related matters with regulatory agencies, industry groups, and stakeholders.


Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of safety leadership experience in the heavy civil construction industry.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable regulations and standards.
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to mentor and manage safety professionals and influence across all organizational levels.
  • Strong analytical, strategic planning, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management platforms (HCSS Heavy Job preferred).
  • OSHA 30 certification required; additional certifications (e.g., CSP, CHST) strongly preferred.
  • Ability and willingness to visit field operations regularly and work in outdoor environments under various weather conditions.
  • Ability to remain alert and responsive in highly safety-sensitive environments near heavy equipment and live traffic.
  • Reliable transportation and valid driver's license with insurance; ability to travel locally as needed.
