Job Description
The School Improvement Specialist is responsible in communicating and providing technical assistance to LEAs who have schools that have been designated in Federal or State school improvement. This position is also responsible for implementing all requirements for Federal (Targeted Support and Improvement (TSI), and Additional Targeted Support and Improvement (ATSI), and Comprehensive Support and Improvement (CSI)) and/or State School Improvement Programs including the School Turnaround and Leadership Development Act, Elevate, and Springboard. This specialist is integral in ensuring effective communication about State, LEA, and school roles and responsibilities in school improvement.
The School Improvement Specialist reports to the Director of School Improvement, and will work with other staff to communicate, provide technical assistance, mitigate risks, solve challenges, manage budgets, work with contractors, and build coherence.

Priorities
  • Ensure compliance to Federal ESEA code, guidance, and requirements.
  • Ensure compliance to School Turnaround and Leadership Development Act legislation and the associated Administrative Board Rule R277-920.
  • Ensure compliance to the Utah State ESSA Plan.
  • Contribute to and support the Utah State Board's Strategic Plan in the ways determined by USBE Leadership.
  • Contribute to the work of the School Improvement Team.

Principal Duties

As the School Improvement Specialist you will typically:
  • Collaborate with other School Improvement Education Specialists and USBE staff.
  • Provide school improvement guidance and resources for LEA and schools.
  • Implement strategies in support of school improvement efforts.
  • Provide technical assistance related to school improvement and Federal and State requirements.
  • Act as a liaison between Utah State Board of Education and specified external groups and contracted service providers as needed.
  • Review and evaluate school improvement plans and reports indicating progress towards reaching school improvement goals.
  • Identify opportunities to solicit and apply stakeholder feedback to improve school improvement supports.
  • Review and approve funding grants and reimbursements.
  • Write or draft correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
  • Attend all required meetings.
  • Meet or exceed USBE expectations.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal person for this position will possess:
  • A minimum of five (5) years of successful K-12 experience working at a public school.
  • A professional Utah teaching license.
  • A Utah K-12 administrative/supervisory license.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and written.
  • The ability to manage multiple complex tasks and is highly organized.
  • The ability to facilitate in person and virtual meetings.
  • The ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
  • The ability to adapt and adjust to changing priorities.
  • The ability to produce high quality work and adhere to deadlines.

      • Tier 2 Defined Contribution Plan. Employer contributes an amount equal to 10% of your salary to a 401(k) plan only.
    • Employer contributions to your 401(k) are vested after four years.
  • Paid Time Off:
    • Annual leave and sick leave are accrued at 4 hours per pay period each (4 hours annual, 4 hours sick).
    • Annual leave amounts increase with years of service.
    • We have 12 paid holidays.
