Job Description

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine seeks a hand surgeon holding an MD (or equivalent) for a faculty position with open rank and tenure status. The candidate must be board-certified or board-eligible for orthopaedic surgery and eligible to be licensed in Alabama. Candidate must have completed a fellowship in orthopaedic surgery, have in-depth clinical knowledge and excellent communication skills, and be highly motivated and compassionate to all patients. Dedication to teaching and training resident physicians is expected. Rank, salary, and tenure status commensurate with experience and qualifications.

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is passionate about mentoring and training the next generation of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Robust training for residents is provided in all aspects of the specialty. Training in orthopaedic surgery is provided at the University Hospital, UAB Highlands, the Veterans' Administration Hospital, Children's of Alabama, and the American Sports Medicine Institute. These hospitals provided an average daily orthopaedic census of 90 patients and account for 4,000 operative procedures each year. Outpatient visits relating to orthopaedics at these hospitals total over 60,000, including 10,000 emergency room visits.
