Description
This position is a school-based mental health professional that provides psycho-educational support for students who attend a particular school location which is to be determined. Provides direct service to students who have academic and social difficulties in the traditional school setting, as well as direct service to students who struggle with significant behavioral, emotional, and/or mental health challenges. Incumbent is a member of the school-based mental health team along with the school counselors and school social worker(s) serving the school and works collaboratively with building administration, school staff, and community partners to meet the academic and social, emotional, and mental health needs of students. Familiarity with education law and special education regulations preferred. Knowledge of available community resources preferred. Flexibility is required to work with diversity of individuals in a variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes. Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.
Essential Job Functions
o Provides academic and behavioral intervention services for students in collaboration with classroom teachers. Prepares clearly written, comprehensive psychological reports which address the referral concerns and provide practical recommendations that can be realistically implemented by school personnel and used to assist in the development of the Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
o Consults and assists teachers to determine and implement appropriate academic and behavioral interventions in classrooms.
o Performs psycho-educational assessments of students, observations, data collection, interpretation and analysis.
o Participates in child study and eligibility meetings of students to diagnose and prescribe student interventions.
o Consults and collaborates with parents, teachers, students and administrators.
o Maintains accurate and careful records of all psychological services provided.
o Follows federal, state, and local laws, regulations and policies regarding children's educational welfare; and serves as an advocate for students and parents.
o Works with the critical incident team in the school, including reactions to illness, deaths and abuse.
o Provides individual and/or group counseling services.
o Develops and coordinates various psychological services available to students.
o Provides training to staff and parents.
o Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
o Educates and collaborates with faculty and staff to create safe, supportive, and trauma informed teaching environments.
o Plans and implements preventative efforts increasing student engagement and decreasing student absenteeism.
o Collaborates with families, staff, and outside resources to support student needs.
o Consults with teachers, administrators and other school personnel to help them better understand and work with individual student behavior.
o Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications.
Extensive knowledge of child and adolescent growth and development, both normal and abnormal, and of curriculum and instructional practices including behavior management are required. Highly developed counseling skills for crisis and non-crisis situations and a broad background in psychological/educational testing, test interpretation, and application to behavioral and instructional strategies are also required. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, to meet the diverse needs of our school community. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability in individual and group decision making, problem analysis and conflict resolution and the ability to collaborate with other therapeutic and instructional personnel. Skills in managing time and appropriate resources is required.
Must hold or be eligible for a valid license issued by the Department of Education with an endorsement in school psychology.
Must be able to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 to 50 pounds occasionally, and may assist, move, or restrain students when required to intervene in student safety issues. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, lift, walk, stand, and hear.
