Purpose of the Position:

The Senior Director, Institutional Business Development will be responsible for working with institutional investors across multiple channels in the United States and Canada to build relationships and raise capital for abrdn's investment strategies. The ideal candidate will have an extensive network and a proven track record of raising assets in both public and private markets.

II. Primary Responsibilities:
  • Successfully implement and execute on a strategic sales plan for your territory focused public fund, corporate and endowment and foundation channels.
  • Maintain high levels of engagement with prospective clients in your territory resulting in a robust opportunity pipeline and successful conversion to new business.
  • Work closely with abrdn investment teams and product specialists, partnering with them to thoroughly understand our investment capabilities and present them effectively to your prospects.
  • Work collaboratively in a true team environment with abrdn's Consultant Relations, Institutional Relationship Management, and broader firm to enhance the resources of the firm to generate successful results.
  • Make firm-level and product-related presentations to prospects in which you credibly articulate the investment strategy for a diverse range of products and vehicles across multiple asset classes. Must demonstrate the ability to convey unique product attributes which differentiate our strategies.
  • Coordinate with US and Global distribution teams to establish product prioritization so that efforts are aligned and efficiently allocated.
  • Lead in the preparation of all finals presentations for prospects including pre-finals discussions with prospects/consultants as well as coordinating all internal logistics - presentation materials, meeting logistics, rehearsals, and follow-up.
  • Potential to work with select existing client relationships and work collaboratively in a true team environment with Institutional Relationship Management, Consultant Relations, and Client Service teams to deliver best in class service to our clients.
  • Ensure field consultants in territory are covered and up-to-speed on our top tiered products.
  • Represent abrdn's corporate story and brand effectively in the marketplace.
  • Attend industry-specific conferences and events.
  • Substantial travel (50% or more) is required with this position.


III. Qualifications and Experience Required:
  • Bachelor's degree required; CFA and/or MBA preferred.
  • Series 7 & 63 required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of institutional sales experience.
  • Strong knowledge of public, corporate, endowment and foundation and Taft- Hartley market segments required with extensive network of existing contacts at large plans.
  • An exceptional team player.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Very strong presentation and meeting leadership skills.
  • Outstanding analytical ability and a strong understanding of investment products and capital markets.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive relationships with both external and internal business partners.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to interact with people having varying degrees of investment savvy.
  • Diligent, punctual, self-disciplined and possesses a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; gathers and analyzes information thoughtfully, uses reason even when taking care of emotional topics.
  • Sets high expectations for self and others.
