The Position:

The Senior Director of Development is responsible for creating, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive fundraising program to support FSA's mission. The position engages Board members and donors in development activities and leverages key relationships and contacts within and outside of FSA's network to ensure revenue goals are met. Working closely with the CEO, the Senior Director of Development is responsible for the following activities to support FSA's mission:
  • Recruit and cultivate donors
  • Further develop and oversee major gifts and planned giving programs
  • Support special capital and endowment initiatives
  • Cultivate business/corporate sponsorships

The Senior Director of Development reports to the CEO, supervises the Donor Relations and Event Management Specialist, the Community Engagement Specialist, and the Communications and Marketing Manager, and works closely with the Director of Grants and Partnerships.

Sample Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Staff Supervision
  • Maintain staffing levels by recruiting, interviewing, selecting, orienting, developing, and evaluating.
  • Meet individually with direct reports on a weekly and/or biweekly basis to provide ongoing feedback and direction, support, consultation, and discuss any corrective actions as necessary.
  • Monitor employee productivity and evaluate outcomes.
  • Review and approve requests for leave, timecards, and other administrative tasks.
  • Conduct training and create other professional development opportunities to develop employee skills and knowledge.
  • Conduct formal employee yearly evaluations to set goals based on performance and program objectives.
  • Maintain a safe and inclusive work environment by establishing and enforcing FSA standards and adhering to legal regulations.


  • Program Development, Compliance, and Evaluation
  • Collaborates with CEO in cultivating and maintaining donors through personal contact, specialized correspondence, and attending in-person visits.
  • Solicits and cultivates strategic donors, developing personal knowledge and understanding of donors; expands donor pool on all levels.
  • Along with the CEO, encourages, motivates, and supports the Board in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors.
  • Engages in research to identify new individual, foundation, and corporate prospects.
  • Identifies, prepares requests and participates in donor strategy and visits, and follows up on new and renewal contributions from individuals, foundations, clubs, organizations, and corporations. Acknowledges and appreciates all donors.
  • Works with Communication and Marketing Manager to produce major donors, corporate sponsors, and board solicitation/support materials with the intent to retain or upgrade gifts when possible.
  • Develops and refines, with the support and involvement of the CEO and Board, planned giving and major gifts activities.
  • Builds and maintains strong working relationships with Development and other Board and Committee Members through participation in the Development Committee.
  • In collaboration with Balance Financial Management, produces and provides regular detailed accountability reports about FSA's finances as it relates to all fundraising operations.
  • Together with the Donor Relations and Event Management Specialist, coordinates fundraising, friend-raising, and donor recognition events.
  • Records Management - Responsible for supervision of donor database maintenance. Maintains security and quality controls to protect proprietary information and insure privacy.
  • Receives, assesses, and coordinates with staff and Board, all fundraising activities and outreach requests from community groups.

  • Community Partnerships
  • Work collaboratively with key staff to articulate, illustrate, and convey FSA's mission-driven work.
  • Develop effective working relationships with staff, volunteers, vendors, and donors.
  • Network and collaborate with community partners to cultivate relationships to increase FSA's visibility and position in the community.
  • Support and promote outreach efforts and community events with outreach materials, outreach kit, branding, and publicity.


  • Management Team Member
  • Participate in Program Management Team meetings to ensure alignment in program operations and strategic program development.
  • Participate in the ongoing development, evaluation, and implementation of operational and strategic plans.
  • Implement quality assurance and risk management processes.
  • Participate and support agency-wide organizational initiatives.
  • Implements, adheres to, and enforces systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Participate in Board meetings or other agency committees as needed.
  • Ability to respond to the community and offer support in a crisis.
  • Cultivate a climate that invites and motivates employees from diverse backgrounds, providing the platform and support to grow and lead at FSA.
  • Model and ensure an inclusive, welcoming, and inspiring organizational culture aligned with FSA's values.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Employment Qualifications and Standards:
  • B.A./B.S. in any discipline required.
  • At least five years of nonprofit fundraising experience for a significant non-profit organization.
  • Demonstrated success leading individual giving and major donor campaigns.
  • Valid California driver's license, auto insurance and reliable transportation are required.


  • Classification, Hours and Pay Rate:
    • This position is full-time, salaried/exempt and offers a comprehensive benefits package, including 90-100% employer-paid medical (HMO/PPO), dental, vision, HSA/FSA, and generous PTO/vacation. Additionally, you'll receive generous holiday pay and a 403(b) retirement plan.
    • The annual salary for this position is $108,201.60.
