Job Summary:
The Sr. Director, Primary Care provides oversight and leadership of multiple physician practices by planning, directing, and coordinating all operational, business, and clinical activities to meet the strategic goals, clinical mission, and financial objectives of the Primary Care division of Erlanger Medical Group. Key responsibilities include planning, organizing, implementing, delegating, coordinating and overseeing operations of all aspects of business and operations of the practices comprising the Primary Care Division. The Sr. Director ensures that quality services are provided according to established policies and procedures.

Education:
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in business administration, health administration or related discipline.

Preferred:
- Master's degree in health administration, business or related field with evidence of substantial experience in practice management desired.

Experience:
Required:
- Minimum of five years of progressive experience in a medical group practice environment with at least three years of direct management responsibility in a healthcare setting/clinical practice, including operational budgetary responsibility.
- Understanding of the evolving health care industry relative to the changes in organization, financing and delivery of health care services including how they impact physician group practices and health systems
- Functional knowledge of quality reporting and payment initiatives e.g. PQRS, CGCAHPS, PCMH and CPC+ initiatives, etc.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills as well as strong interpersonal and skills with the ability to interact with people at all levels of the organization
- A management style that emphasizes collegiality, teamwork, participation, communication, and a service orientation
- Ability to collect analyze, and apply data and other pertinent information to develop short and long-term practice goals and budget needs
- The ability to delegate and still maintain close control over operations and financial performance

Preferred:
- Practice management experience in a healthcare network or system with responsibility and oversight for multiple practice locations.

Department Position Summary:
Clinical Operations
- Functions in collaboration with the Medical Leadership for the Adult Primary Care Division of Erlanger Medical Group.
- Supervises and directs the Practice Managers at assigned practices
- Ensures providers, at assigned practices, understand their obligations:
- To honor their Employment Agreements with the Health System
- In Compliance with Health System Policies & procedures, DNV, HIPPA and OIG
- To support the strategic goals and imperatives of Erlanger Medical Group and the Erlanger Health System
- Participate in strategic planning, business development, operational oversight and process improvement with regard to clinical programs and facility management.
- Develop a detailed knowledge of the activities at each location with an understanding of the relationship between the operations of the unit and the resulting financial and quality performance.
- Monitor key operational indicators, including non-financial metrics, assess current performance, and develop plans or corrective actions to achieve optimal performance.
- Establish priorities for self and others, handle multiple concurrent activities, work within a budget, manage projects and people, meet deadlines and achieve results
- Work collaboratively with other colleagues and Health System Departments to meet institutional goals.

Financial Management
- Responsible for oversight of the financial performance of the Erlanger Medical Group practices as assigned, including, but not limited to:
- Develop and monitor annual operation and capital budgets for Primary Care Division consistent with organization guidelines.
- Monitor variance analyses for practices within the Primary Care Division with regard to operation revenues and expenses; oversee development and implementation of corrective actions as appropriate
- Ensure that internal controls are observed in accordance with established fiscal policies and procedures.
- Develop and implement operational changes required to maximize effectiveness and efficiency without jeopardizing quality of patient care. Identify innovative ways to improve the financial performance (bottom line) of each practice.
- Monitor key financial and operational performance ratios for each practice and analyze performance to comparing to industry benchmarks (e.g. MGMA or AMGA) to ensure long term success
- Maintain knowledge of physician employment contracts to ensure adherence to all terms and conditions

Support for Clinical Leaders
- Exercise appropriate authority with respect to physicians, managers, and staff to resolve any medical-administrative problems, maintain open lines of communication, persuade and negotiate changes required to maximize performance and productivity of each practice.
- Ensure understanding and consistent implementation of Erlanger Medical Group and Health System plan goals and objectives
- Promote teamwork among all physicians and staff
- Meet at least quarterly with clinical leaders to review financial and operational performance of Practices, providing alternative plans or corrective actions as appropriate.
- Assist with the recruitment and orientation of new medical staff.
- Provide information as necessary to support decision-making.
- Perform other duties and projects as required/assigned.

Physician Relationships
- Proactively communicate with the Erlanger Medical Group physicians regarding operational plans and performance, policies and procedures of Erlanger Health System and regulatory requirements with which Erlanger Health System must comply.
- Engage the Erlanger Medical Group physicians to participate actively in operational improvement efforts.
- Work with physicians, managers and staff to resolve any medical administrative problems and maintain open lines of communication.
- Maintain knowledge of physician employment contracts to ensure adherence with terms and conditions.
