The Senior Director of Academic Services for the Upward Bound Academy is responsible for the complete operation of academic services within the Academy, ensuring its effectiveness in meeting program goals and federal requirements. This role requires a dynamic leader who can develop and implement strategic initiatives to enhance program impact, maintain compliance with federal TRIO regulations, and foster strong partnerships within the university and the local community.

The Upward Bound Academy at UAB consists of two Classic Upward Bound programs and two Upward Bound Math & Science programs. The Upward Bound Academy is an intensive, year-round pre-college TRIO program designed to support the academic success and personal development of high school students from Birmingham City and the Greater Birmingham Metropolitan area. The program provides supplemental education, academic and personal counseling, tutoring, mentoring, career exploration, assistance with scholarships and financial aid applications, and cultural exposure-all essential for potential first-generation college students and/or economically disadvantaged youth to complete both secondary and postsecondary education successfully. This role is vital to empowering students with the tools, resources, and guidance needed to overcome barriers to higher education and achieve long-term academic and career success.

Key Responsibilities:
Provides philosophical and operational direction to Academic Services, which includes functions in counseling, academic advising, tutoring, and teaching math and English remedial courses.
Develops and oversees department budget; analyzes all expenditures relative to federal guidelines; evaluates and signs all budget expenditures.
Oversees the department's personnel functions and supervises four full-time professionals, a secretary, and 35-plus part-time tutors. Reviews and sign all personal actions and all contracts made with university departments.
Writes the program's federal grant proposal each year assuring that all regulations are addressed and that all required documentation is provided.
Ensures that each student assisted by the program meets the federal eligibility requirements and that all areas in the grant are being accomplished; handles the program's public relations and advertising.
Manages an extensive follow-up system on all students who participate in the program; researches and writes the regular Federal Student Performance reports; evaluates current student progress reports and takes necessary action steps.
Conducts regular evaluations on all programs and services provided by the grant.
Ensures that all participants in need of financial aid receive sufficient aid to stay in college or document the reasons aid was not received.
Performs other duties as assigned.
University & Community Engagement: Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with UAB's academic affairs division, faculty, and community partners to support student success.
Provide periodic reports to the Executive Director, summarizing program achievements, challenges, and areas for growth.

(Annual Salary: $67,070 - $93,000)

Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Approximately four (4) to ten (10) direct reports.
