The Prosperity Vice Presidency is one of the World Bank Group's five verticals, with a mandate that emphasizes "Growth, Finance, and Institutions for all." Our approach leverages data-driven analysis and combines expertise from both the public and private sectors, together with International Finance Corporation (IFC). The Prosperity Vice Presidency supports clients in advancing evidence-based structural reforms to establish the foundations for inclusive and sustainable growth in the thematic areas of macro-fiscal policy; financial sector resilience, access, and deepening; private sector development, trade, and competitiveness; and governance and public sector reform, including statistical capacity. Prosperity is comprised of five Global Departments.
The Jobs and Growth Unit is dedicated to promoting sustainable economic development and job creation in developing countries. The unit focuses on analyzing labor markets, economic growth patterns, and the impact of various policies on employment and economic performance. The unit collaborates with governments, international organizations, and other stakeholders to design and implement effective strategies for economic development.
Responsibilities
The Senior Economist will be responsible for economic analysis, provide high-level policy advice, and support projects, DPOs, and analytical products to promote job creation and economic growth. Specific responsibilities and duties will include (but not be limited to) the following:
Contribute to the design and development of the core country diagnostic, the Country Growth and Jobs Report.
Provide support and guidance to the operational country teams and country economists in preparing the pipeline of the new Growth and Jobs Reports, including direct contributions as part of the team, drafting specific parts of reports, doing sector, thematic, or policy impact analysis.
Liaise with other parts of the Bank, especially the global teams in EP and other Departments within and outside of Prosperity, including People, Planet, and Digital verticals as well as the Outcomes department.
Coordinate with the modelling team within EMFJG and sometimes in-country on modelling of the policy impacts.
Lead, participate in, and contribute to policy research on jobs and growth, especially on estimation of the policy impact, using complex economic modelling, empirical research, and most recent academic literature in specific policy areas.
Contribute to global analytical works and flagship reports.
Build and support relationships with GPs and Regions to ensure a strategic and coordinated approach and that corporate messaging and multilateral deliverables are aligned with WBG priorities.
In coordination with colleagues across the institution, support the crafting of key positioning speeches or presentations for senior leadership, including by identifying additional relevant internal and external research, analysis and trends.
Support preparations for high-level meetings, events, and trips and, participate in and provide read-outs from various multilateral events/meetings.
As needed, support the EMFJG PM or EP Director with other ad hoc projects or tasks.
Selection Criteria
Master's degree in economics or related field with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience. PhD in economics or related field is preferred.
Strong analytical and technical background especially on issues related to economic growth, micro-foundations of economic growth, productivity, impact of structural reforms on economic growth, macroeconomic stability and growth.
Proficiency or experience in other related topics, such as labor markets and jobs, and/or experience in country economics are advantages.
Ability to effectively interact with internal and external clients at all levels and in a multicultural environment. Track record of managing relationships with a variety of stakeholders.
Ability to effectively interact with finance ministries staff on main global economic challenges and key corporate priorities.
Sound judgment, diplomacy skills and sensitivity to the WBG's internal and external relationships, including in dealing with sensitive and confidential matters.
Ability to analyze and synthesize complex issues and to communicate to others in a clear and concise way.
Knowledge of the WBG and the issues currently facing the international development and multilateral arena; solid understanding of or prior experience with EMFJG's areas of responsibilities a plus.
Strong organizational skills, proven ability to perform multiple tasks, prioritize deliverables and work under pressure and tight deadlines with accuracy and professionalism.
Ability to quickly learn, adapt, and be innovative as new challenges arise. Demonstrated high initiative, drive for results, flexibility, and high levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
Ability to work both independently and in diverse teams.
Strong oral and written communication skills and command of English.
Ability to work flexibly, creatively, and to multitask as the need arises. High degree of self-motivation, positive attitude, commitment, and drive.
