Senior Electrical Engineer

BB&E is a full service civil and environmental engineering and consulting firm, headquartered in Northville, Michigan, which services both the Federal and Industrial sectors throughout the United States. BB&E team members provide Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering and Program/Project Management Services to Federal and private sectors.

Position Summary

BB&E is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team to assist with fulfilling the design and construction requirements of the FBI Architectural Engineering Services Unit (AESU) at the FBI North Campus at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. Services include assisting the AESU's staff in meeting the increasing requirements of the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Finance and Facilities Division, through providing preliminary planning, feasibility studies, functional studies, conceptual designs, development of design intent documents, and development and technical review of construction documents for renovation and construction projects. Construction estimating and review, project facilitation and inspection services during construction of projects may also be necessary.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Review electrical design drawings and specifications related to lighting system, lighting control system, power system, power distribution, grounding, lightning protection system, generator, and UPS system for commercial, government, and data center facilities
  • Select lighting fixtures and coordinate with other disciplines
  • Perform the electrical demand load calculations and generator load calculations
  • Select electrical equipment, size conduits, perform electrical panel load calculations, create and review product specifications, and create and review design layouts for electrical systems
  • Organize and conduct site visits for the purpose of data collection and evaluation of electrical systems, equipment, components, and materials for projects
  • Provide recommendations to the clients and other team members
  • Troubleshoot electrical system issues
  • Interpret National Electrical code and be able to communicate to the A/E firm for the project, as well as internal team members and clients
  • Act as a consultant in the establishment of design standards and criteria for construction projects; provide expert electrical engineering comments based on these requirements
  • Participate in quality control and quality assurance during construction
  • Assist in writing scopes of work for projects
  • Perform construction administration duties, such as reviewing RFIs, field reports, and submittals
  • Design power to the data communication equipment, such as communication racks
  • Layout the most efficient method for cable trays in the building; coordinate with A/E firm
  • Understand door hardware and conduit conditions required for each system
  • Read photometric site plans and verify correctness
  • Size and lay out a UPS system
  • Review sound masking and PA systems
  • Coordinate with AESU peer colleagues, FBI Project Managers, customers and other Bureau personnel/contractors, and other project team members on projects as necessary
  • Other similar or related services not of a decision-making nature
  • Miscellaneous services which will require proficiency in the use of Microsoft's Word, Excel, Power Point, Project software tools and AutoCAD
  • Assist in the development of reports, studies, and presentations
  • Exhibit professionalism, good customer service and communication skills and serve as a cooperative team player
  • Multitask and assume multiple projects or assignments simultaneously
  • Collaborate and assist in resolving critical and possibly controversial issues with a multidisciplined team of architects, engineers and federal agency clients
  • Exhibit resiliency if shifting priorities require reprioritization of workload
  • Implement standards as outlined in the Bureau's Program of Requirements (POR), Campus Design Guides and Construction Standards; suggest edits or updates to these documents, as applicable

Key Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain a minimum, unescorted access to FBI facilities is required; Secret security clearance in JPAS at time of award is required; ability to obtain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance in support of the FBI is required
  • Certification: Professional Engineer (PE) license is preferable
  • Knowledge: Ability to size transformers and possess an understanding of riser diagrams
  • Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
  • Software: Proficiency in the most current version of Revit and AutoCAD, and MS Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required
  • Self-Starter: Highly motivated, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines autonomously

Experience & Education
  • Experience: 10 years' Electrical Engineering experience in commercial/government office building design and construction is required; 20 years or more is preferable
  • Education: A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university is required

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand/walk/climb/kneel/crouch and remain in a stationary position/sit at least 60% of the time
  • Ability to operate office equipment, including computer, copy machine, phone, etc.
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms
  • Capable of lifting up to 10 lbs.
