Primary Purpose:

Takes responsibility for playing a vital role in SDG E's distribution planning team, including applying established distribution planning criteria and using sound utility engineering practices to identify capacity deficiencies in the distribution system. Leads and conducts complex technical studies including but not limited to load flow analysis, DER and load forecasting studies and interconnection studies. Develops scoping documents for complex distribution capacity upgrade projects and propose solutions for identified distribution grid needs falling outside of established distribution planning criteria, including recommendations for new distribution circuits/substations and upgrade/replacement of existing distribution substation transformers and equipment. Supports strategic initiatives within the department and serves as subject matter expertise (SME) in internal and external discussions pertaining to the distribution planning process (DPP). May represent the team and SDG E in discussions with other utilities and in front of the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and other active proceeding stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports one or multiple subject areas within the distribution planning team, including but not limited to forecasting, planning, interconnection and policy development.
  • Determines current and future distribution planning capacity requirements to meet forecast demands in SDG E's territory.
  • Performs engineering studies for the integration of DERs and large load additions into the distribution system and identifies grid needs.
  • Reviews, proposes, and implements new methodology to aspects of distribution planning process.
  • Develops and implements project solutions and plans for distribution system expansion and enhancement.
  • Serves as distribution planning liaison for distribution capacity upgrades within a multi-disciplinary team throughout the life cycle of the upgrade.
  • Supports customer facing groups in providing distribution planning expertise in DER interconnection and load energization requests.
  • Drafts technical studies and business-oriented reports as needed, and deliver presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serves as technical support for the Emergency Operation Center during activation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).


Qualifications

Hybrid Schedule:

  • Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or Professional Engineer (PE) certification in addition to five (5) years of engineering experience or an Advanced degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • 8 years related engineering experience.
  • Distribution Planning - Proficiency in distribution load flow analysis, project management, capacity planning, grid needs assessment, project solutioning and planning, load forecasting, and DER integration studies.
  • Data Analysis - Measuring and managing organization data, identifying methodological best practices and conducting statistical analyzes.
  • Feasibility Studies - An assessment of the practicality of a proposed plan or project. A feasibility study analyzes the viability of a project to determine whether the project or venture is likely to succeed.
  • Power Flow Analysis Modeling - A quantitative analysis of the flow of power in the distribution system.
  • Power System Engineering - A subfield of electrical engineering that deals with the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization of electric power, and the electrical apparatus connected to such systems.
  • Distribution System Performance Monitoring - Tracking and evaluating data on distribution system and their assets in order to plan the system.
  • Project/Program Management - The process of leading the work of a team to achieve goals and meet success criteria at a specified time.
  • Regulatory Compliance - Ensuring an organization's adherence to laws, regulations, guidelines and specifications relevant to its business processes. Familiarity with CPUC and regulatory processes is a plus. Intermediate Required
  • Stakeholder Management - Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and build working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Technical Reporting and public speaking - Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to draft technical and policy-oriented report and deliver public presentations.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the state of California.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in engineering.
