Position Overview:

The Senior Financial Analyst - Capital, is a key business partner responsible for ensuring the financial integrity of capital projects across the organization. This role focuses on providing financial analysis, ensuring compliance with fixed asset policies, and maintaining accurate capital accounting records. This role will also be a key contributor to Motiva's Capital Planning and evaluation processes. Serving as a key liaison between finance, project management, and other cross-functional teams, the analyst supports informed financial decision-making and adherence to capital and project management standards. Success in this role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic environment.

There is an expectation for this Finance & Accounting professional to possess, or to develop, a competence in Capital Project terminology and ways of working. Success in this position will require an understanding how the two areas intersect and the ability to explain impacts to either side.

Responsibilities:
  • Support Motiva Capital team and Business stakeholders on annual Capital Plan process from initial ideation to final Shareholder approval
  • Review and challenge capital projects, including business justifications, economic assumptions, and capital vs. expense determinations
  • Interpret and apply Motiva policies and procedures, specifically in the areas of Fixed Asset Accounting, Delegation of Authority, and Project Governance
  • Complete, analyze, and validate project economics for capital projects
  • Manage capital project administration tasks, including creation, closure, asset management, and retirements
  • Perform Value of Work Done (VOWD) analysis and execute manual journal entries for month-end reporting
  • Provide financial support for Major Capital Projects and other investments across the business
  • Prepare monthly estimates, perform variance analysis, and support financial close activities
  • Prepare and maintain detailed and comprehensive documentation of processes and procedures
  • Cross-train with Manufacturing Site Capital Analysts to ensure coverage and consistency
  • Contribute to ad-hoc and special projects as needed


Experience and Qualifications:

Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Finance, Accounting, or Capital Projects
  • Strong stakeholder management and collaboration skills
  • Familiarity in financial controls, governance, and assurance practices.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver business-focused reports to cross-functional teams.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to detail for accurate financial reporting and analysis.
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent time management with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (PivotTables, VLOOKUPs, SUMIFS, and other advanced functions)


Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Experience in the Oil & Gas industry.
  • Knowledge of financial systems, including SAP.
  • Familiarity with Refinery and/or Chemical complexes.
  • Exposure to Planning & Reporting, Fixed Assets, or Project Controls
  • Proficient in financial modeling, analysis, and valuation techniques
