The ministry is seeking a results-oriented Senior Fisheries Ecologist to join their Fish and Wildlife Branch. This position will lead regulatory and policy development within the Fisheries Unit, provide support for internal and external engagement on strategic initiatives related to fisheries management and allocation, and support the development of fisheries-related management plans.

This position

  • Leads and manages strategic legislative and policy development and review related to fisheries management and allocation, aquaculture, species at risk, and aquatic invasive species;
  • Coordinates and leads consultations and acts as liaison with other ministries and agencies, stakeholder groups and the public in discussions of proposed changes to provincial-scale policy, legislation and regulations;
  • Provides professional leadership and advice to government, business, industry and the public on fisheries legislation and policy; and,
  • Will include oversight of fisheries-related licensing and permitting, including supervision of staff responsible for delivery.


The successful candidate will have knowledge of fisheries management and allocation, aquaculture, and aquatic invasive species management and prevention, including working knowledge of relevant federal and provincial legislation. Knowledge of current issues relating to fisheries management in Saskatchewan is critical to the success of the position.

The successful candidate will be able to work collaboratively in a team environment, as part of the Fisheries Unit. The ideal candidate for this position will have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in the biological sciences, supplemented with five to ten years of experience related to fisheries and aquatic ecology, fisheries management and allocation, policy development, legal interpretations and research and analysis. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years of experience in staff supervision.
