Orla operates the Camino Rojo Oxide Gold Mine, a gold and silver open-pit heap leach mine, located in Zacatecas State, Central Mexico. This low-cost operation is 100% owned by Orla, covers over 139,000 hectares, and includes a large sulphide mineral endowment located beneath the oxide resources. We are also advancing permitting on our South Railroad Project, a feasibility-stage, open-pit heap leach project located on the prolific Carlin trend in Nevada.
More recently, we've entered into an agreement with Newmont Corporation to acquire the Musselwhite Mine, located in Northern Ontario on Lake Opapimiskan. This project has great potential in a tier-one mining jurisdiction, and with more than 25 years of proven track record. This fly-in, fly-out operation will position Orla to double its annual gold production and provide us with excellent future opportunities. We expect this transaction to close in Q1 2025.
As part of our acquisition of the Musselwhite Mine, we are recruiting for Senior Geologist, Surface Exploration. This role will be based on-site and will be responsible for ensuring the execution of exploration programs, including target generation, core logging, sampling, and real-time interpretation of results. Through expert technical contributions, data management, and close collaboration with cross-functional teams. This role will report to the Senior Geologist II, Surface Exploration, and will be key to the success of the Exploration department.
Responsibilities include:
Contribute to target generation, assessment, and project pipeline management.
Assure optimal use of all data to contribute to quality interpretation and support exploration decision-making.
Contribute technical expertise to daily program execution, including drilling, logging, and sampling.
Provide real-time geological insights and assessment of results to ensure discovery-driven focus of exploration programs.
Optimize drill plan to grow resources and make discoveries.
Perform and assist with geological and structural mapping and modelling.
Provide mentorship to geology and exploration personnel at site.
Oversee and complete core logging, sampling, and real-time data capture with strict attention to accuracy.
Work closely with Senior Geologist, Modeling to maintain and update preliminary geological models
Conduct routine QA/QC checks on collected data, coordinate corrective actions with Data and Land Geologist.
Prepare draft reports and communicate significant findings to the Senior Geologist II and Exploration Manager.
Stay current on industry best practices in data handling and incorporate them into daily tasks.
Model proactive problem-solving and decision-making.
Maintain alignment with Senior Geologist II directives, escalating major challenges when needed.
Coordinate with peers (e.g., Senior Geologist, Modeling) to facilitate smooth operations.
Support and reinforce a positive team culture, emphasizing safety and collaboration.
Mentor junior geologists and field technicians through daily guidance and feedback.
Provide regular updates to Senior Geologist II on project status, technical issues, and team performance.
Conduct on-the-job training sessions for new hires on safety, logging protocols, and data management.
Facilitate information flow within the geology team and maintain a positive, collaborative environment.
Support contract evaluations by providing performance feedback and usage metrics.
Identify opportunities for incremental cost savings in operations.
Report budget discrepancies or resource issues to the Senior Geologist II.
Coordinate procurement of essential geological supplies under established budget guidelines.
Skills and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Geology or Geological Engineering (MSc a plus).
Minimum 8 years of experience in Exploration geologist roles within the mining industry.
Demonstrated experience overseeing and managing Exploration teams
Practical experience planning and managing large exploration programs with multiple drill rigs.
Proven exposure to exploration successes, discoveries, resources growth.
Experience with exploration targets generation, assessment, and target portfolio (pipeline) management.
Familiarity with exploration data management and analysis.
Strong exploration experience with Archean gold deposits, including experience with various deposit types such as Epithermal, Orogenic, Porphyry, etc. is a plus.
Good understanding of geological and structural modelling.
Excellent knowledge of QAQC principles including implementation and data assessment.
Proficiency using exploration and mining software.
Good knowledge of exploration programs, data interpretation, targeting, QAQC, and GIS.
Exceptional communication, leadership, multi-tasking, and organization skills.
Professional member of the Association of Professional Geoscientists (APGO) is mandatory.
Advanced level of knowledge of most common geological, exploration, GIS software.
Must have good English written and verbal communication skills. French communication skills are an asset.

The schedule is 14x14, working 12-hour days
