What You'll Be Doing

As a Senior Group Portfolio Manager supporting Private Banking, you'll provide leadership, guidance, and credit oversight for a team of Portfolio Managers and Credit Analysts. You'll manage underwriting workflow, advise on deal structuring, and maintain strong alignment with CIBC's risk culture. In this role, you'll act as a strategic partner to Private Bankers, Relationship Managers, and Regional Leaders to deliver exceptional service to high-net-worth clients. You'll ensure that credit actions are timely, compliant, and tailored to meet the unique financial needs of private clients.

How You'll Succeed
  • Guide complex credit decisions: Oversee underwriting and credit structuring for sophisticated clients, ensuring alignment with CIBC's risk appetite and the unique needs of high-net-worth individuals and families.
  • Deliver a seamless client experience: Act as the escalation point for onboarding, loan closings, and portfolio maintenance to help deliver a white-glove experience in collaboration with Private Bankers and internal partners.
  • Lead and develop your team: Provide coaching and development to Portfolio Managers and Analysts through mentorship, training, and feedback. Foster a strong culture of accountability, performance, and continuous learning.
  • Ensure portfolio quality: Maintain oversight of the loan portfolio, reviewing submissions, renewals, and risk ratings, while ensuring all credit actions are properly documented and compliant.
  • Collaborate across teams: Partner with Credit Risk, Regional Leaders, and Underwriting Managers to ensure effective pipeline management, timely approvals, and consistent application of credit policy.
  • Manage and monitor risk: Serve as the primary point of contact for portfolio risk insights, reviews, and regulatory exams. Oversee activities related to Enhanced Oversight, SOX controls, and special credit reviews.
  • Support strategic goals: Help set and manage priorities across your portfolio teams, ensuring consistent execution in alignment with business unit strategies and Private Banking goals.

Who You Are
  • Experienced leader: You bring 10+ years of credit and underwriting experience, ideally in a Private Banking, Commercial Banking, or Wealth Lending environment, and have led high-performing credit or portfolio teams.
  • Client-focused: You understand the financial sophistication and service expectations of ultra-high-net-worth clients and families.
  • Skilled in credit structuring: You've worked with complex balance sheets, tax returns, and business entities, and can tailor credit solutions to match the client's full financial picture.
  • Strong communicator: You're confident leading discussions with senior leaders and credit partners, and your communication style builds trust and drives clarity.
  • Analytically sharp: You can distill complex financial information into actionable insights and identify emerging risks before they surface.
  • Compliance-minded: You understand regulatory frameworks, risk rating systems, and credit policy, and you ensure your team is always audit-ready.
  • Tech-savvy and organized: You're comfortable navigating underwriting systems, Salesforce, and Microsoft Office, and thrive in environments where you're managing multiple moving parts.

What Success Looks Like
  • You establish yourself as a trusted advisor to internal partners and consistently provide clarity and direction on complex credit actions.
  • Your team is engaged, confident, and well-trained-executing underwriting responsibilities with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Credit requests are handled proactively and with a strong sense of urgency, helping to reduce bottlenecks in the approval process.
  • Risk reviews and compliance activities are smooth and well-prepared, reflecting your team's attention to detail and readiness.
  • You balance coaching and oversight with strategic thinking-managing workload while helping the team evolve alongside business needs.
  • The client experience is enhanced through your partnership with Private Bankers and Relationship Managers, helping deliver seamless lending solutions for high-net-worth clients.
