Description:

Highland is looking for a Senior Laravel Application Developer to create new digital products working in small, multi-disciplinary teams.

Highland is a digital product and innovation consultancy based in Chicago. We research, design, and build digital products and experiences for mission-driven organizations and customer-centric companies in healthcare, education, financial services, and beyond.

We often refer to what we design as Experiences that Matter: digital products and experiences that make the world a better place to live in. Our mission is rooted in Human Flourishing inspired by research conducted at Harvard Universitys Institute for Quantitative Social Science. We design our work to help human beings flourish. The world is full of innovative products that make life worse for real humans. We work with organizations that see humans as more than just consumers, and seek to make lives better in ways big and small. And we organize ourselves so we can flourish too, committing to a sustainable workload and pursuing work with meaning and purpose.

The first project for this role will be to join a team building an MVP for a new-to-the-world digital product that brings a fresh perspective on helping teams get projects done.

  • Youve built responsive UI and mobile-first websites / front ends
  • You have a desire to more deeply learn your tools and tech stack
  • You know how to configure servers and automate deployments (we use Laravel Forge)

    • Tailwind CSS, the TALL stack , Inertia.js a plus
    • Web application system architecture & design
    • Advanced layout and design techniques
    • A11Y & W3C standards
    • Other server-side languages such as Python and Ruby

Team & Process
  • Youve been a key member in a team of product managers, designers, researchers, and software engineers.
  • You have high standards in code quality and experience with automated testing.
  • Youre always curious for a better way, continually assessing and improving digital product development practices with product and user-centric thinking.
  • You seek diverse perspectives for feedback and critique throughout projects and initiatives.

Client Relationships
  • You advise and consult with client leaders and team members on product and technical direction, with end-user and business outcomes in mind.
  • Youre focused on the end goal as well as the right next step.
  • You seek frank, honest conversations with clients and team members alike.
  • Youre a clear communicator, regardless of medium.

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science preferred. Other comparable training is acceptable.
  • 6+ years of proven experience developing custom software.
