Position Title: Senior Manager, Communications

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Vice President of Communications, the Senior Manager, Communications will play a key role in helping the Lupus Foundation of America promote its work with a focus on lupus research, education, advocacy/public policy and key Foundation programs supported by federal grants. This role will work closely with other members of the Marketing and Communications team, consultants, and our national staff. This is a Washington, DC based hybrid position.

The Senior Manager will develop and execute strategic communications plans that result in greater awareness and understanding of lupus, foster constituent engagement, and increase understanding and participation in the Foundation's programs and initiatives. The Senior Manager will be responsible for leading and executing cross-functional marketing efforts, creating multi-channel content and a range of assets for use in external communications and ensuring communications present accurate and engaging information that reflect the Foundation's brand and mission. The Senior Manager should possess strong project management, writing and editing skills, and demonstrate the ability to take complex scientific and medical information and communicate it in understandable ways for various audience types.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Oversee the project management of various marketing and communications activities, leading the planning and execution of the process, including coordination of visual design assets, while also doing the writing, editing and other details of the work.
Develop marketing content, assets and communications consistent with content strategy and brand identity, including:

o constituent and stakeholder email communications, press releases, web and social media posts, speeches, flyers, presentations, blogs, e-newsletters, articles, advertisements, video scripts, and digital toolkits.
Develop and execute marketing and communications strategies to support various research, education, advocacy and federal grant initiatives to include:

o key research programs such as our patient and caregiver registry Research Accelerated by You (RAY), the Foundation's research grant program, our Lupus AIM (Addressing health Inequities in Minorities) program and research-focused conferences such as ACR Convergence.

o advocacy initiatives such as the National Lupus Advocacy Summit, appropriations announcements and communicating the Foundation's advocacy efforts on access to care.

o health education promotions for the National Resource Center on Lupus, including the Strategies to Embrace Living with Lupus Fearlessly (SELF) program.

o federal grant marketing support of programs and campaigns within the Foundation's PULSE and IMPACT+ grant.
Write and manage a monthly national e-newsletter to include working with the regional offices to coordinate local content.
Collaborate with the Research Department to co-manage the Inside Lupus Research content development process and posting of articles.
Review, proofread and copy edit content to ensure it adheres to organizational style and brand guidelines, plain language and communication best practices.
Serve as the marketing lead for the Be Fierce. Take Control. awareness campaign designed to reach young African American/Black and Hispanic/Latina women who are at a greater risk for developing lupus.
Develop media pitches and materials including press releases, media kits, message points and fact sheets, and secure media placements through media pitches to amplify lupus awareness and position the organization as a leader in the field.
Develop strategic opportunities to creatively share the mission of the organization and day-to-day impact of donors/volunteers through stories, video, visuals, social media, etc.
Contribute to maintaining the communications calendar to ensure that upcoming events, programs and other content marketing needs are strategically included across communications channels and equip staff with opportunities for intersection/collaboration.
Effectively utilize the Foundation's project management software (Redbooth) to create and manage workspaces, track and coordinate tasks, and ultimately allow for successful collaboration and execution of projects.
Support and attend as necessary Lupus Foundation of America national office events and interact with people with lupus and their families with professionalism and empathy.
Other duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

The Senior Manager, Communications must be a team player, effectively juggling a variety of projects across organization departments with grace and professionalism. This position requires an individual who is strategic and forward-thinking, detail oriented, and an excellent writer and strong project manager, with demonstrated experience developing and executing strategic communications plans. This individual must have proven success reaching and engaging diverse populations, securing media coverage, and creating engaging content. The individual in this position should possess a strong desire to learn about and understand lupus and the Foundation's priorities, programs and services.
A minimum of 5-7 years of marketing/communications/public relations experience, preferably in the PR agency (with health, nonprofit or other industry-related client experience) or non-profit industry.
Seasoned experience in developing and executing marketing and communications strategies in comparable operating environments, including complex arrays of constituents and to diverse audiences.
Extremely detail oriented and comfortable developing and working with project plans/timelines.
Exceptional project management, writing and editing skills, including the ability to communicate complex scientific and health information in understandable ways and to write for a variety of audiences and communications mediums, ensuring communications are clear, consistent, error-free, in line with Foundation tone, and engaging to a variety of target audiences.
Collaborative working style, experience working in small teams, and the ability to complete high-quality independent work.
Candidate should be an organized self-starter and able to work independently while managing multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Strong interpersonal skills, proven ability to work cross-functionally and to be able to identify marketing/communications needs, solutions and resolve challenges.
Proven experience in fostering and leveraging relationships with media to secure earned media and successfully place stories where relationships have not been developed yet.
Working knowledge of the following (or similar) software, tools and platforms: Google Drive, Microsoft Office Suite, PR Newswire, Redbooth, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, TikTok and YouTube.
Demonstrated ability to use social media channels (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, TikTok and other social media channels) to effectively deliver marketing content.
Experience developing and editing videos and podcasts are a plus.

EDUCATION
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, journalism or a related field.
