POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Manager of Federal Policy and Advocacy works closely with AFSP's Senior Director of Federal Policy and Advocacy and serves as a leading federal advocate before Congress and the Administration. The Senior Manager assists and plays an integral role in managing the organization's federal public policy priorities and legislative and regulatory agenda, and in maintaining and enhancing AFSP's advocacy presence in Washington, DC.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Annual salary range: $91,100 - 97,000
22 PTO (vacation, sick, wellness and personal days) your first year of employment (5 additional days 2nd year)

The Senior Manager assists and plays an integral role in managing the organization's federal public policy priorities and legislative and regulatory agenda, and in maintaining and enhancing AFSP's advocacy presence in Washington, DC.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serve as the leading federal level advocate and subject matter expert on identified policy priorities and manage bipartisan engagement on Capitol Hill with members of Congress and staff.
- Draft talking points, fact sheets, testimony and other advocacy materials and supports necessary to advance federal legislative goals for internal and external audiences
- Establish and maintain relationships with members of Congress and staff, relevant key Administration officials, and other relevant leaders
- Manage federal level issues communication with AFSP chapters, grassroots volunteers such as Volunteer Advocates, Advocacy Ambassadors and other interested parties, in consultation with advocacy staff colleagues.
- Represent AFSP to relevant coalitions and assist with the coordination of AFSP's participation in related meetings, conferences, and public events on federal policy issues
- Assist in the development of long and short term national public policy and legislative goals as approved by AFSP's Public Policy Council and National Board of Directors and objectives in conjunction with the Senior Director of Federal Policy and Advocacy
- Assist with annual Advocacy Forum planning, present on federal policy during the Advocacy Forum, and contribute to and manage other events such as Capitol Hill briefings and federal policy webinars
- Manage engagement with government affairs consultants on issues within assigned federal portfolio, in consultation with supervisor.
- Track federal bills and other communications in database
- Oversee federal policy activities of the Richard B. Kirchhoff Public Policy internship program
- Collaborate with other members of the AFSP Policy and Advocacy Staff as well as other AFSP national and chapter staff and volunteers as appropriate
- Handle other duties as assigned by supervisor

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- 3 years' requisite experience in government relations or advocacy at the federal level, preferably with a non-profit organization or government office.
- BA or BS required
- Proven record of accomplishments working in federal policy and advocacy
- Experience working with or on Capitol Hill
- Independent and driven skill set
- Excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 4-6 years of federal advocacy experience
- Solid research and analytical skills
- A network of professional staff contacts related to public policy on and off Capitol Hill is a plus;
- Contact and experience within mental health or suicide prevention is helpful
- Proficiency with legislative tracking and grassroots engagement software (e.g., Soft Edge, CQ Roll Call, FiscalNote, Quorum, etc.)
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
- Ability to effectively communicate complex policy issues to diverse audiences via printed materials, social media, and other online content writing
- Comfortable giving formal presentations to large and small audiences, in-person and virtually
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners
- Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities
