Job Description
The Sr. Manager - Operating Tax (Property and Sales/Use) works directly with the Director - Operating Tax and supports the Company's Operating Tax planning, compliance, and audits. Supports, maintains and oversight of Operating Tax return compliance including monthly, sales/use and property tax returns, audits initiated by state and local jurisdictions, financial reporting requirements, as well as GAAP and SOX requirements associated with ASC450. This may include an outsourcing engagement for various compliance functions.
POSITION LOCATION: This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule based in Deerfield, IL. On-site required Tuesday-Thursday.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support the development, implementation, and maintenance of planning to minimize and reduce the overall Operating Tax burden. Participate in the development of restructuring planning to ensure the Company operates in the most tax efficient structure for Operating Tax purposes.
Manage all Operating Tax planning, research, and analysis for United States and Canadian taxes. Monitor legislative developments in applicable areas of tax law to determine the impact on the Company.
Monitor developments in applicable areas of the tax law to determine the impact from an Operating Tax perspective. Engage as appropriate in advocating policy change with taxing jurisdictions to lower the tax burden for the Company.
Oversee the management of all Property and Sales/Use tax compliance including returns, assessments, and tax payments and the integration of new legal entities, acquisitions and corporate transactions into tax filings and processes.
Develop and implement practices and procedures for efficient collection of information and preparation of Operating Tax returns including development of new processes to meet changing tax law requirements. Assess and apply technology and system solutions to tax processes and information needs. Develop a seamless and efficient process for providing information to outsource providers and/or Tax Software.
Manage all accounting for Operating Taxes to include account reconciliations and SOX compliance. This could include the oversight of work performed by internal tax and/or the Global Controllership team.
Manage processes to ensure timely recognition and financial reporting of period specific Operating Tax events including research and documentation of the Company's tax positions. Processes include quarterly evaluations of legislative developments, transactions, business initiatives, tax planning and ASC 450.
Manage the relationship with the Operating Tax auditors. Conduct and control the Company's examinations including oversight of the collection of data in response to information requests, defend the Company's tax positions and work with all auditors/agents. Manage all Operating Tax notices and
responses. Negotiate with the states on tax, penalties, and interest assessments in order to minimize the Company's liabilities.
Partner with the Business on corporate initiatives to plan and structure operations and to ensure the Company is engaged in tax planning and strategy development for minimizing property and sales/use tax expense and exposure.
Manage, train, and develop the Managers/Sr. Tax Analysts/Consultants working in this area and provide collaborative support to all Sr. Tax Managers.
Qualifications
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Management, or Finance
7-10 years of experience in Operating Taxes in a work environment dealing with large corporate tax affairs.
In-depth knowledge of operating tax laws and regulations, with experience managing compliance across multiple jurisdictions
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong technical knowledge of Operating Tax, including an ability to effectively research and document technical positions.
Strong and effective project, time, and resource management skills as well as sound business judgment.
Ability to work under tight deadlines.
Willingness to embrace change and proactively assess opportunities for process improvement, especially through leveraging technology.
Ability to form relationships within the Company, with external advisors, and with tax officials, to effectively promote the Company's tax position and influence others.
Must be a solid team player and demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment across different functional areas and within different levels of staff, peers, and senior management. Instill trust by gaining confidence of co-workers, direct reports, and others.
Demonstrate strong commitment to "customer focused" operations where our "customers" are often non-Tax business groups within the Company.
Ability to effectively communicate complex operating tax topics in a way that individuals outside the tax department can understand.
Problem solving skills, including the ability to identify and solve complex technical and managerial problems, and do so in a proactive and action-oriented manner (i.e. roll up your sleeves and dive in).
Experience with ERP systems and tax software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Avalara)

Please note that actual salaries may vary within the range, or be above or below the range, based on factors including, but not limited to, education, training, experience, professional achievement, business need, and location.
