Job Description

Under the direction of the Managing Director, U.S. Tax Planning and Advisory, the Senior Manager, U.S. Tax Advisory provides U.S. tax advisory guidance for projects and initiatives within the BMO Financial Group ("BMOFG"). Provides timely and appropriate U.S. tax advice to the three operating groups within BMOFG - Personal & Commercial Banking (P&C), BMO Capital Markets, and BMO Wealth Management - as well as to Corporate Services areas. Provides federal and state income tax analysis and support on specific transactions, in particular acquisitions, acquisition integration, transfer pricing and corporate restructure initiatives. Partners with members of U.S. Tax Team to ensure that U.S. tax advice and planning for U.S. companies within BMOFG are appropriately reflected in the U.S. tax returns as filed and in the tax provision reported in BFC's quarterly consolidated financial statement and relevant legal entity financial statements. Assists with BMO Taxation projects as required. Assists in implementing best practices with respect to the U.S. tax advisory projects as appropriate, and fosters an environment of continuous improvement.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

The Senior Manager, U.S. Tax Advisory is responsible for:

Relationship management/Advisory
  • Developing and managing relationships with U.S. Lines of Business ("LOBs") and partnering with the LOBs and other Corporate groups to identify, develop and implement appropriate U.S. tax strategies that minimize the U.S. tax burden and support the financial and strategic initiatives of BMOFG and reinforce commitment to maximizing shareholder value and within the risk tolerance of BMOFG.
  • Providing timely, thorough U.S. tax advice on current and proposed transactions and products and impact of changes in tax legislation.
  • Working collaboratively on BMO Taxation projects, as required.
  • Identifying U.S. tax withholding and reporting considerations of business transactions and communicating such considerations clearly with the LOBs, Corporate Services teams and operations teams as needed.
  • Performing tax research of current and proposed U.S. federal and state income tax laws.
  • Reviewing, preparing or presenting formal and informal reports and analysis to support tax objectives, decision making and solution resolution, as required.
  • Consulting with external advisors as needed.


Leadership/strategy
  • Recommending appropriate U.S. tax strategies to support the financial and strategic initiatives of BMOFG and reinforce commitment to maximizing shareholder value.
  • Providing leadership by working collaboratively with BMO Taxation staff and other stakeholders to develop and implement vision, mission, values, operational resource plans, and establishing strategies and action plans to achieve the goals, and actively participating in the implementation of actions necessary to correct internal and external issues.


People
  • Working with Canada Tax team on cross-border projects and initiatives, clearly explaining relevant U.S. tax advisory considerations and coordinating with Canada Tax on responses to the LOBs and other stakeholders as needed.
  • Identifying training needs of BMO Taxation staff with respect to line of business, U.S. taxation, accounting and other required knowledge or skills and working with Managing Director, U.S. Tax Planning and Advisory, to close the gaps.
  • Displaying and encouraging appropriate high-performance behaviors that are congruent with the BMOFG's model and for the coaching and mentoring of such behaviors in the BMO Taxation Group.


Risk Management and Control
  • Reviewing and identifying potential U.S. tax risks (with respect to income, indirect and other taxes) inherent within internal initiatives, new investments, new product modifications, and service agreements, among other areas.
  • Recommending and monitoring compliance with policies, procedures and controls that ensure U.S. tax advice and planning with respect to the BMOFG is appropriately supported, documented and reviewed, and within the risk tolerance of BMOFG, and any tax risks are identified, assessed, and mitigated and communicated to the Managing Director, U.S. Tax Planning and Advisory, and other stakeholders as appropriate.
  • Establishing and implementing transfer pricing policy, procedures and practices regarding the pricing and documentation of cross-border BMOFG transactions.
  • Adhering to all aspects of BMO's Code of Conduct, including individual accountability as it relates to potential conflicts of interest, safeguarding of customer information, trading in securities, anti-money laundering, privacy and disclosure of outside business activities.
  • Providing no tax advice directly or indirectly to particular customers or employees of BMOFG.


Knowledge And Skills
  • Licensed attorney and/or professional designation CPA with relevant experience
  • Juris Doctor or Masters' Degree in Accounting or Taxation preferred or equivalent coursework
  • 8 plus years of experience in corporate tax in a large accounting firm, law firm, or large corporation, preferably in an advisory role
  • Comfort with tax research tools including RIA Checkpoint and Bloomberg Tax
  • Knowledge of LAN based computer programs including Excel, Word
  • Ability to learn and use other software tools
  • Good communication skills - written, verbal and presentation

Salary:

$110,000.00 - $204,100.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group's pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group's expected target for the first year in this position.
