Summary
King County Information Technology (KCIT) is seeking a Senior Optical Network Engineer to lead and support KCIT's Optical Network Infrastructure. The responsibilities of this position include designing, maintaining, and administering large-scale Adva Optical networks, ensuring high availability, performance, and compliance with industry standards. This role serves as a senior engineering resource within KCIT's Network Services INET team, requiring deep expertise in Adva/Adtran solutions, network architecture, troubleshooting, maintenance, and continuous improvement initiatives. The Senior Network Engineer will collaborate with stakeholders, contribute to long-term network strategies, and ensure the seamless integration of optical networking technologies.

Job Duties

  • Design, implement, and maintain scalable Adva Optical networks, integrating them with broader enterprise infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with network architects to align Adva solutions with enterprise network strategies.
  • Lead troubleshooting efforts and resolve Adva Optical network issues to minimize downtime.
  • Oversee network upgrades and maintenance activities to enhance performance and reliability.
  • Mentor journey-level engineers on Adva/Adtran technologies, fostering technical growth within the team.
  • Conduct training and workshops to strengthen technical expertise in optical networking.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of Adva network designs, configurations, and troubleshooting protocols.
  • Ensure network configurations adhere to organizational standards and compliance requirements.
  • Apply best practices to enhance network performance and drive innovative network enhancements.
  • Act as a liaison between vendors, technical support teams, and departments to resolve complex system or network issues.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), contribute to change management processes, and support physical security measures.
  • Provide high-quality customer service, enter requests in the IT Service Center system, and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • 7+ years in IT roles, with experience maintaining enterprise network systems according to industry best practices.
  • 5+ years designing and implementing enterprise optical networks with Adva/Adtran solutions.
  • 3+ years of experience working with Cisco routers/switches and security tools.
  • Strong background in network architecture, troubleshooting, and performance optimization.
  • Experience mentoring and training technical staff on advanced network technologies.
  • Ability to build strong customer relationships, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical articulation and documentation.

  • Successful completion of CJIS (Criminal Justice Information System) background check including fingerprinting
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodations
  • May be responsible for the physical loading, unloading and/or sorting of equipment and boxes of varying sizes and weights by hand, including lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying, placing, as well as physical bending, twisting, kneeling, stooping, or crawling in a safe and efficient manner
  • Valid WA State driver's license

Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience with PowerShell and Red Hat Linux.
  • Network certifications such as Adva Optical Networking Certification, CCNP (Cisco Certified Network Professional), or equivalent.
  • Microsoft Azure Certification.
  • Experience in large-scale enterprise network environments with a focus on high availability and performance.

Supplemental Information
Work Environment

The work associated with this position will be performed primarily on site, with remote work available on occasion. Employees will have access to shared workspaces at various King County facilities. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements. Work Schedule

The normal workweek for this position is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Alternative work schedules may be considered. This position is FLSA Exempt and is not eligible for overtime pay. This position is required to participate in an After Hours Support Rotation.
