About the Role

The Senior Paralegal is an integral part of Latham's Legal Professional and Paralegal team. This role will be responsible for providing expertise and support to the departmental attorneys in the Litigation & Trial Department, with a focus on the Supreme Court & Appellate Practice Group and Intellectual Property Practice Group, while overseeing all logistical and administrative work associated with appellate litigation, including researching and ensuring compliance with court rules, shepardizing, cite checking, and formatting legal briefs, preparing appendices, and interfacing with clerk's offices at appellate courts. This role will be located in our Washington, D.C. office. Please note that this role may be eligible for a flexible working schedule that allows for a hybrid and in-office presence.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Other key responsibilities include:
  • Administrative tasks related to the proper functioning of a partner's litigation and trial practice, including but not limited to, working directly with associates, appellate paralegals, legal secretaries, and other support staff on confidential tasks
  • Working with and/or managing multiple litigation teams simultaneously
  • Identifying and resolving any discrepancies throughout the duration of a case
  • Preparing and filing a bill of costs
  • Assisting in preparing pre- and post-trial motions, gathering related exhibits, and preparing appellate filings and indices as necessary
  • Promoting effective work practices, working as a team member, and showing respect for co-workers
  • Protecting and maintaining any highly sensitive, confidential, privileged, financial, and/or proprietary information that Latham & Watkins retains

We'd love to hear from you if you:
  • Demonstrate a high aptitude for reading, cite checking, and editing complex legal briefs, with superb attention to detail
  • Exhibit a good working knowledge of security-related practices and documentation, including but not limited to, state-level and federal-level filing requirements, document management, bluebooking, shepardizing, and cite checking
  • Display proficient knowledge of applications typically used in a legal office environment, such as billing software and databases

And have:
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university (and signed declaration or paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal program if located in a California office)
  • Prior appellate paralegal experience at a law firm, in government service or equivalent, preferably

Pay Range

USD $140,000.00 - USD $170,000.00 /Yr.
