Primary Purpose

Provides support to Payroll Manager in maintaining compliance with multiple laws, regulations, and contracts governing wage payment and delivery of payroll services to Sempra and its affiliates.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Acts as subject matter expert on payroll related matters, provides council, guidance, and training to facilitate resolution of payroll and tax-related issues that require analysis and escalation.
  • Assists Payroll Manager with establishing guidelines for executing and reporting new or unusual wages or non-wages, taxing executive or non-executive compensation, applying relevant local, State and Federal tax requirements, and reporting in accounting system and to regulatory agencies.
  • Assists Payroll Manager with process improvement and reputation management.
  • Analyzes and proposes recommendations for improvement and client satisfaction.
  • Develops and implements new procedures/practices as a result of policy additions or enhancements with focus on continuous improvement.
  • Coordinates annual year-end projects including working with ADP partner on quarterly and year-end closing procedures, monitoring ADP partner progress with audits and reconciliation procedures, executing proper recognition of executive and employee fringe benefits, funding timely taxes associated with fringe benefits and stock releases, establishing proper cut-offs, reporting all funds (wages and other compensation) to regulatory agencies.
  • Works closely with My Info, Human Resources and Labor Relations groups to ensure day-to-day cross functional processes are working effectively and efficiently.
  • Coordinates the execution of executive-related compensation and benefits payments, including but limited to Executive Incentive Compensation, imputed income, Stock-related payments, other special payments requiring research, etc.
  • Acts as subject matter expert on timekeeping-related projects.
  • Takes lead responsibility on special projects requiring more advance accounting, data analysis and/or computer application.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).


*This is an employment contract available through the end of 2025.

Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, related field or equivalent training and/or experience is required.

Experience
  • 5 years of experience in payroll, accounting, finance, tax practices and principles or closely related field is required.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.
  • We offer a hybrid work environment. Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow you to work from the office three days per week and work remotely on the remaining workdays.

Skills and Abilities

The following skills and abilities are required:
  • Knowledge of state and federal payroll and tax regulations.
  • Working knowledge of payroll software, HRIS, computer concepts and techniques.
  • Analytical ability to analyze payroll data.
  • Written and oral communication skills.
  • Interpersonal and team development skills.
  • Ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive information in strict accordance with company confidentiality and data security policies.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) is preferred.
