Job Introduction

It's an exciting time to be part of BBC News as we grow in North America. Our independent, impartial and unrivalled global journalism has made us one of the most trusted news brands in the US, where we reach tens of millions of people each week across digital, TV and radio.

The BBC is looking for a Senior Los Angeles producer to work with our news team in LA. We're looking for a terrific journalist with strong editorial and field experience. You will have a nose for a story, with excellent storytelling skills and first rate TV, Digital and Radio production skills.

Main Responsibilities

The Senior Producer works closely with the BBC's LA Correspondent to provide news content across the BBC's TV, Radio, digital channels and platforms, bringing the biggest US stories to our international and UK audiences. You will find and research original stories and news lines, work on pre planned news events and will be deployed to breaking news stories, working both in the field and in the bureau.

The BBC News LA team cover stories in the Western US but are also deployed across the country when needed.

Please note that this is not a Reporter position.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Extensive, demonstrable experience of producing original, high impact, high quality journalism in English for television, radio, digital video and online. Including excellent radio package editing skills.
  • Excellent, proven editorial judgement and an authoritative grasp of your patch, US affairs in general and key issues of the day as well as the ability to translate them into accessible journalism
  • The ability to work calmly, collaboratively, and safely in difficult conditions and to lead teams in hostile environments.
  • Extensive, demonstrable and recent experience of Broadcast field production during busy breaking stories, confident at juggling the demands of the story, working under pressure, hitting tight deadlines, and communicating effectively with colleagues and other news gathering teams in the field.
  • The necessary technical knowledge and skills, for example, editing packages for radio. You'll also have an aptitude and enthusiasm to learn and extend your creative and technical skills as a producer.
  • Ability and willingness to travel anywhere in the US - often at short notice - and being able to work flexibly is essential.
  • A thorough understanding of the BBC's global and domestic output requirements - its platforms, audiences, and ambitions.
  • To be fully across new and constantly changing technology used to feed material back to base and go live from the field
  • A thorough understanding of the requirements of digital output, including social media and demonstrable experience of delivering for them.
  • Ability to adapt to changing audience habits and new formats and a willingness to undergo training to keep abreast of new technologies
  • This is a local hire position and eligible candidates must be able to live and work in the US (US citizenship, Green Card, or existing work authorization)
