RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs budget and expense analysis, periodic invoicing, financial reporting, reconciliations, monitoring and associated communications with granting agencies
- Prepare grant closeout functions required by the Research Operations Office and external agencies including reconciliations, financial status reports, final invoices, zeroing out budgets, and final reporting
- Review general ledger transactions and prepare accurate and complete journal entries and supporting documentation to audit standard
- Reviews grant contracts for compliance with related accounting regulations
- Supports the Research Institute in education and training of Principal Investigators and research staff by assessing needs and resolving issues of the Principal Investigator related to grant accounts and analysis and support for grants
- Monitor and assess the status of ongoing grants and the burn rate of the grants to evaluate funding requirements and potential deficiencies
- Assist Operations Director in budget preparation and maintenance by clarifying financial information, providing advice and guidance, and resolving any issues regarding Holland Bloorview financial reporting requirements
- Summarize financial forecasting to determine research budget allocated for operational funding (i.e. staffing levels)
- Work collaboratively with Hospital Finance in the month end and fiscal year end procedures, including analysis and reporting
- Present recommendations for procedural and work-flow efficiencies, including technical solutions, in the department
- Coordinate the year-end audit file by organizing the audit file, liaising with the auditors to answer any questions they might have or directing them to the appropriate person to ensure the year-end audit runs smoothly and efficiently
- Leads the submission of annual reports to the University of Toronto, Ontario Hospital Association, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation Impact Report and others
- Other related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration
- Completion or near completion of a Canadian recognized accounting designation (CPA via CA, CMA or CGA stream)
- 5-7 years accounting experience preferably with grant management or non-profit
- Experience with government reporting requirements
- Knowledge and skill in applying analytical and evaluative techniques to the identification and resolution of grant administration issues and knowledge of Canadian PSAB, accounting, bookkeeping, laws, regulations, agency policies, precedent cases, and other requirements that affect grant program administration
- Strong analytical skills, self-motivated, proactive, and have demonstrated excellence in organizing and prioritizing workflow in a fast paced and high-volume environment
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interface with Principal Investigators, granting agencies, external auditors and all levels within the Research Institute
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Highly computer literate and have proficiency with the MS office suite
- Knowledge of Meditech, Adaptive and SharePoint are preferred
- Ability to design, analyze, and prepare financial reports
- Ability to monitor expenditures and maintain data
