Job Summary
Responsible for safety leadership, decisions, practices, and training within the Birck Nanotechnology Center, and representative to outside agencies for safety related issues at the Birck Center. Responsible as a leader/resource for advanced packaging and chemical use within Birck. This position will be part of the engineering staff and will also have select equipment/process responsibility.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure safety compliance by mentoring students, staff, and faculty with consulting on chemical and operational safety issues, including chemical processes. This includes approving SDSs for new proposed chemical use in the facility, designing safe practices for specific chemical requests, and overseeing student use of chemicals, owning and updating all safety documentation, & developing and implementing safety policies. Be the leading resource on chemical processes and mentoring. Gate keeper of allowable chemical use in Birck.
- Manage laboratory safety & housekeeping, including updating lab documentation of hazard assessments, emergency door postings, and laboratory leadership.Ownership of the Toxic Gas Monitoring System and other safety sensors/systems in the facility. Provide first interface to Purdue EH&S organization and manage the audits and re-indemnification processes, including corrective actions to achieve compliance. Othe safety duties including training users on safe LN2 fills, managing the annual all-user online training, annual DHS chemical inventory & documentation, & managing monthly safety meetings
- Develop advanced packaging processes and procedures, including the damascene process and other leading edge packaging technologies. Characterize and control the advanced packaging processes using techniques such as Statistical Process Control, and utilize effective problem-solving tools to trouble-shoot high variation results.
What We're Looking For:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and/or Industrial Hygiene/Health Science
- Four or more years of experience in academic or industrial safety/process organization
- Strong safety background with skills in chemical safety, hazardous assessment
