Position Summary
BB&E is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Structural Engineer to join our team, supporting the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Architectural Engineering Services Unit (AESU) and Facilities Management Unit (FMU) responsible for architectural, engineering and planning (AEP) services. AEP service requirements will include design and engineering services and on-site AE services. This position will be at the FBI Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.

BB&E is seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented Structural Engineer to join our team, supporting the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Architectural Engineering Services Unit (AESU) and Facilities Management Unit (FMU) responsible for architectural, engineering and planning (AEP) services. AEP service requirements will include design and engineering services and on-site AE services. This position will be at the FBI Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform tasks that include, programming, existing condition surveys and analysis, preparation of conceptual designs, development of design intent drawings, technical review of construction documents, construction phase support, review of technical drawings and specifications for compliance with applicable codes and agency requirements, and development of scope of work (SOW) documents for design-bid-build and design-build procurements including creating performance-based vs. prescriptive requirements
- Review blast and progressive collapse designs
- Assist in preparation of performance work requirements to include SOWs, assistance with cost estimates, and schematic designs less than 15% to provide engineered solutions to a myriad of structural engineering tasks, for example, structural modifications to existing buildings, repair requirements for damaged structures, structural design recommendations for new structures, etc.
- Review, analyze, and provide technical analysis of existing structures to ensure appropriate material, connectors, and other methods are sufficient to handle expected loads (e.g., dead/live loads, wind, snow, rain, seismic, thermal, etc.)
- Coordinate with FBI peer colleagues, Project Managers and other FBI personnel/contractors, and other project team members on projects as necessary; provide other similar or related services not of a decision-making nature
- Provide miscellaneous services that require proficiency in the use of Microsoft's Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, SharePoint, Facilities Integration Tool (FIT), cost estimation software tools, and AutoCAD; use large format printers and scanners to support design tasks
- Assist in the development of reports and studies
- Exhibit good customer service skills and be a cooperative team player
- Multitask and take on multiple projects or assignments simultaneously
- Collaborate and assist in resolving critical and possibly controversial issues with a multi-disciplined team of architects, engineers, and federal agency clients
- Understand and implement specifications and standards as outlined in the FBI Program of Requirements (POR) for specific projects
- Perform as a consultant in the establishment of design standards and criteria for construction projects; assist in the development of the POR by suggesting edits or updates to this document, as applicable
- Provide on-site field surveys and verifications including documentation of existing structural systems; provide corrective action recommendations based on those observations
- Perform design reviews and submit technical review comments in the required spreadsheet format, which will be provided
- Ensure that drawings and specifications, submitted to the FBI for review, comply with structural POR requirements
- Understand and implement security requirements as defined by the FBI's PSU, including, but not limited to, blast requirements
- Review proposals, documents, drawings, and specifications for accuracy and ability to meet POR requirements; provide comments and/or recommendations as necessary
- Perform construction administration duties, such as reviewing and answering requests for information (RFI), reviewing submittals, reviewing and producing field reports, walking the site and verifying accuracy and compliance of construction with drawings and POR requirements, participating in creation and closeout of punch-list, and other tasks as determined and requested by the COR and CO
- Provide document review of campus design and construction standards
Key Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship and a Secret Security Clearance (NACI) at time of hire and ability to obtain a Top-Secret level security clearance is required
- Knowledge: Experience with reviewing blast and progressive collapse designs is required
- Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
- Software: Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Project software tools, SharePoint, FIT, cost estimation software tools, and AutoCAD is required
- Certification: Professional certification is preferred
- Self-Starter: Highly motivated, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines autonomously
Experience & Education
- Experience: 4-7 years' experience for a mid-level position; 8-15 years for senior-level
- Education: Graduate of an ABET (The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc.) accredited Engineering college curriculum (4-year degree)
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, and remain in a stationary position/sit at least 60% of the time
- Ability to operate office equipment, including computer, large format printers and scanners to support design tasks, copy machine, phone, etc.
- Capable of lifting up to 10 lbs.
