Key Role
Reporting into the Senior Director of Product and UX, the Senior UX Designer plays a critical role on a centralized team providing UX services to Product teams. This individual is responsible for designing and improving user experiences and interfaces throughout our ecosystem of digital applications. They work with IMS Leads, product managers, developers, business analysts and other designers to create intuitive, efficient, user-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing interfaces.

Key Role
Reporting into the Senior Director of Product and UX, the Senior UX Designer plays a critical role on a centralized team providing UX services to Product teams. This individual is responsible for designing and improving user experiences and interfaces throughout our ecosystem of digital applications. They work with IMS Leads, product managers, developers, business analysts and other designers to create intuitive, efficient, user-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing interfaces.
Key Responsibilities
Conducting user research: conduct user research to understand users' needs, preferences, and pain points, and use that information to inform the design process.
- Persona and Journey Ownership: create and maintain user personas and map their journeys through our products and ecosystems.
- Understand User Metrics: drive design decisions with data and insights constructed from analysis of analytics and metrics.
- Designing user interfaces: create wireframes, prototypes, and visual designs that meet the needs of the product's users and business goals.
- Conducting usability testing: conduct usability testing to validate design decisions and identify areas for improvement.
- Staying up to date with industry trends: stay up-to-date with the latest design trends, tools, and technologies, and apply them to their work.
- Creating design systems: create and maintain design systems, style guides, and other documentation that standardize design elements and ensure consistency across the platform.
- Performing demonstrations of platform and product designs to internal and external stakeholders as assigned.
- UX evangelism: Act as a UX evangelist and represent product designs to internal and external stakeholders, including customers, partners, and industry analysts.
- Work in alignment with GS1 Canada 's product development lifecycle standard including its principles, policies, and procedures.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams: work with developers, product managers, and other designers to ensure that the product meets business requirements and user needs.
- Contribute to and participate in the UX Community of Practice.
Understand - Understand the vision for the product and interpret into user experience designs.
- Conduct user research to understand and empathize with users' needs, preferences, and pain points, and use that information to inform the design process.
- Stay up to date with the latest design trends, tools, and technologies, and apply them to their work.
- Document and present user's journeys through assigned products in legacy and future state contexts.Research and document user personas.
Design - Create wireframes, prototypes, and visual designs that meet the needs of the product's users and GS1 Canada's business goals.
- Lead the development and maintenance of the GS1 design systems, style guides, and other documentation that standardize design elements and ensure consistency across the product.
- Ensure that all user facing designs are AODA compliant.
- Collaborate with the development team to ensure that proposed user interfaces are technically feasible and/or cost effective.
- Drive design simplicity, usefulness, usability, accessibility, value, and desirability.
Test and Measure - Conduct usability testing to validate design decisions and identify areas for improvement with users, account managers, and business stakeholders.
- Use usage analytics and business data to inform design decisions and measure the efficacy of designs.
- Build and make informed, data-driven arguments for design decisions.
Team - Collaborate with IMS Leads, product managers, developers, business analysts and other designers to define and refine work items (Features, Product Backlog Items and User Stories) and create intuitive, efficient, user-friendly, and aesthetically pleasing interfaces.
- Represent, and advocate for, the voice of the user and for UX best practices in collaborative settings.
- Contribute to the internal UX/UI community of practice to share learnings and best practices
- Represent UX Practice while actively participating in GS1 Canada organizational events
Communicate - Perform demonstrations of designs to internal audiences as well as to external stakeholders as assigned.
- When delivering design demonstrations, include user journey and personas as context as well as descriptions of how data (research, testing, and usage) has informed design decisions.
- Advocate for user-centred thinking across GS1 Canada, driving organization-wide understanding of, and alignment to UX practice.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Strong background in visual design, user research, and user experience design.
- Experience working with front-end developers to ensure that designs are implemented correctly.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills and ability work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Collaborative mindset who works effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong knowledge of design tools such as Balsamiq, Photoshop, XD, Sketch, frameworks such as Bootstrap, material design, and iOS/other design standards, and languages such as JavaScript/iOS/Android, HTML, CSS.
- Understanding of common software development practices.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience interacting with User Groups/Advisory Boards.
- Strong understanding of Agile methodology/SDLC.
- Proficient with user interface design patterns and standard UCD methodologies.
- Strong technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

- Degree or equivalence in one or more of: graphic design, interaction design, psychology, sociology or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in UX/UI design.
- Experience in human-computer interaction and user-centred design principles.
