Essential Duties

1. User Training: Develop novel training methodologies and train and mentor users of the research core, providing guidance and expertise.2. Experiment Support: Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, faculty researchers, and external partners to address research challenges and drive innovation within the research core.3. Facility/Instrument Support: Lead and manage complex research projects within the research core, providing expert scientific guidance and oversight.4. Data Analysis/Interpretation: Provide thought leadership in the field and contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge through collaborations and partnerships.6. Equipment Procurement: Lead the evaluation, acquisition, and maintenance of research core equipment.7. Professional Development: Stay updated with emerging research trends and technologies, driving innovation within the research core. Engage in scientific leadership activities, including leading new core initiatives and representing the research core at conferences and events.8. Scientific Participation: Actively participate in manuscript preparation and grant proposals, as applicable.9, Staff Training and Mentoring: Foster a culture of scientific excellence, mentorship, and professional development.10. Leadership: Collaborate with the university administration and faculty leadership on research core-related initiatives.11. Finance and Admin: Collaborate with the Core Director in the development and implementation of strategic plans and budgets for the research core.12. Vendor Relations: Shapes the overall vendor relations strategy, leads high-level negotiations, and collaborates with vendors on joint research initiatives.13. Education and Outreach: Lead education and outreach activities within the core, including tours, events, etc.

Required Education and Experience

Master's Degree in a related discipline and eight years of related experience or an equivalent combination of skills, education, and experience.

Position Focus:

The Yale CryoEM Resource (YCR) spans three sites: West Campus, Yale School of Medicine, and Science Hill, housing several advanced transmission electron microscopes to support applications from sample screening to single particle analysis and cryo-electron tomography. The research core also features advanced cryogenic sample preparation equipment and space for future expansion. The Site Director will provide strategic leadership, operational oversight, and scientific expertise for one of the three YCR sites. The Site Director will collaborate with researchers across Yale to drive technical advancements, support complex research initiatives, and foster a culture of innovation. The Site Director will play a key role in ensuring the highest standards of user support, training, and methodological development, strengthening Yale's cryo-EM capabilities for internal and external collaborations. The specific site assignment will be determined based on the qualifications of the candidate and institutional priorities.
Primary responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day management and technical direction of the assigned YCR site, ensuring optimal performance of all facility instrumentation, and maintaining an environment that supports cutting-edge research. This includes minimizing equipment downtime, coordinating service and maintenance, managing service contracts, and implementing all necessary safety and security protocols. The Director will also work closely with researchers to provide expert guidance on experimental design, sample preparation, data acquisition, and computational image analysis, ensuring excellence in structure elucidation of biological macromolecules and complexes. In addition to facility operations, the Director will lead efforts to enhance cryo-EM methodologies, develop and implement best practices, and promote technical innovation in data collection and analysis. The Site Director will collaborate with users to promote technical innovation in cryo-EM data collection and analysis, organize and support cryo-EM workshops, and actively promote Yale's cryo-EM expertise within the broader scientific community. The role also involves supporting the YCR Managing Director by participating in user meetings, preparing equipment proposals, assisting in strategic planning, providing cross-coverage at other YCR sites and contributing to recruitment, training, and oversight of additional staff as needed.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Ph.D. or equivalent in biology, chemistry, physics, biophysics, structural biology or a closely related field and 10+ years of relevant experience.

Required Skill/Ability 1:

Expertise in high-resolution structural analysis of macro-molecules using cryo-electron microscopy, including sample preparation and computational analysis with current (and self-written) software.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

High level competence in setting up, maintaining, and coordinating computational support for collection, storage, and analysis of cryo-EM datasets is crucial.

Required Skill/Ability 4:

Demonstrated experience in the use of current generation electron microscopes and direct electron detectors and interest in pursuing cutting-edge structural studies using cryo-EM, independently and with collaborators.
