Job Description

Purpose:

The Social Work Supervisor is responsible for seeing that supervisees perform in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Department and the institution

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • The responsibilities of the Supervisor incorporates those specified for the Social Worker.
    • May be assigned to supervise other staff as in Social Workers or Caseworkers.
    • Arranges regular consultations with supervisees, keeps a log of supervisory sessions and prepares evaluations and competency assessments.
  • Checks supervisee's assessments, chart documentation weekly activity sheets, signs SR70 forms and referrals to health services.
  • Supervisor may also schedule group supervisory conferences as needed.
  • Supervisor will provide for coverage of cases by reassigning workers in her unit or may provide the coverage himself/herself, as needed.
  • Supervisor may assist in the administration and implementation of personnel practices and employment practices.
  • Supervisor may be assigned special projects or administrative assignments related to their areas of responsibility, including performance improvement projects, grant and or proposal writing, etc.
  • Supervisor will review requests for Annual Leave or Comp Time and will discuss with the Caseworker prior to Director's approval. Supervisor must demonstrate coverage of Caseworker/Social Worker prior to approval and projects.
  • May participate in regularly scheduled supervisor meetings.
  • May conduct monthly Performance Improvement surveys and complete appropriate reports and projects.
  • Ability to interpret Social Work policies and practices to other disciplines, departments and community agencies. Supervisor may participate in policy writing when appropriate.
  • In the absence of the Director and/or designee, Supervisor may be temporarily in charge, therefore, it is mandatory that this Supervisor be fully aware of departmental procedures, responsibilities and the hospital's administrative structure.
  • In the absence of one of the supervisees, it is the responsibility of the Supervisor to arrange coverage for the service. In the event that no other staff member is available or able to handle the problem, the Supervisor may have to assume those duties.
  • Access to EPIC, Allscripts, Outlook and ParachuteHealth
  • Social Work Supervisor will participate in Social Workers' weekend and holiday's coverage for ED, Maternity and Pediatric.
  • Supervisor may also have responsibilities that include orienting and training new employees or graduate students.
  • Supervisor may also participate in the screening and interviewing process for hiring prospective candidates for employment.
  • Supervisor is responsible for reviewing and monitoring chart documentation Databases etc. of assigned Supervisees.
  • Supervisor to negotiate or/and to be directly involved in difficult discharge plans with problematic families, and intervene in emergency situations as self-initiation or/and as requested by Director.
  • All Social Work Supervisors, because of the nature of working in a hospital environment, must be able to cover and make appropriate clinical decisions regarding all Social Work Programs and Hospital Units/patient floors/satellite clinics on at least an emergency basis and must be proficient in handling crisis cases, such as Child Abuse, Domestic Violence, Rape, Elder abuse, as they are licensed professionals in a Supervisory role.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    For Assignment to Level III
    • Valid license as an LCSW issued by the NYSED.
