Position: Director Special Education
Location: Willmar Public Schools, District Office located at the Willmar Education and Arts Center (WEAC)
Type: Full-Time - 8 Hours per day, Year Round (260 Days)
Compensation: Based upon qualifications and experience

The Director of Special Education will provide visionary leadership and strategic administration for the special education department. This role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local policies while driving innovative programs and strategies to enhance student outcomes. The Director will supervise and evaluate staff, collaborate with district and school leaders, and manage resources effectively to support our mission of excellence in special education.

As the Director of Special Education with Willmar Public Schools, you'll have the chance to:

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Administration:
  • Lead and administer the special education department, ensuring adherence to all relevant policies and regulations.
  • Supervise and evaluate special education staff, including teachers, paraprofessionals, and support staff, in collaboration with building principals.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and programs that support special education services.
  • Collaborate with district administrators, school principals, and staff to integrate special education programs within the general education setting.

Program Development & Evaluation:
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of special education programs and services.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve student outcomes and support academic achievement for students with disabilities.
  • Address and resolve issues related to special education services, including conflicts and disputes.

Compliance & Documentation:
  • Oversee due process procedures as defined by state and federal law for special education students.
  • Ensure timely completion of all required paperwork and adherence to processes and procedures.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities.

Staff Development & Management:
  • Perform employment functions such as recruitment, hiring, development, evaluation, and termination of staff.
  • Provide professional development and training to special education staff and general education staff working with students with disabilities.

Budget Management:
  • Manage the special education budget, including planning and allocating resources effectively.
  • Direct the spending of the Special Education budget and oversee Third Party Billing.
  • Monitor maintenance of effort spending.

Liaison & Communication:
  • Act as a liaison between the school district and staff, parents, and external agencies, such as the Department of Education.
  • Coordinate and facilitate communication between special education staff, parents, and external agencies.
  • Consult with school personnel and parents regarding appropriate programming and follow-up services, ensuring appropriate reporting to parents.

Continuous Improvement:
  • Stay current with developments in special education laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Participate in local, state, and regional meetings as assigned.
