Team Overview:

Export Development Canada's Special Risks Team is responsible for managing all recovery and rehabilitation efforts on distressed and impaired loans in EDC's Corporate and Canada Account portfolios. The team's responsibilities include working with distressed companies to find solutions that drive the best outcomes for both EDC and its customers, including negotiating debt restructurings (through CCAA/Chapter 11 or out-of-court agreements), and seeking recovery on loans through bankruptcy and similar proceedings or through asset sales, liquidations, etc.

The Special Risks Team works closely with EDC's loan origination teams to share learnings and experience on distressed files, enabling the business teams to adapt their underwriting and portfolio management strategies.

This role will give you an opportunity to apply your knowledge of financing to play an important role in helping manage distressed borrowers, and to work with Canadian and international companies to help them navigate through challenging market conditions.

Reporting to the Director of Special Risks, the successful candidate, depending on the knowledge and expertise of the individual, will be responsible for managing a portfolio of distressed loans (which could range from small commercial domestic loans to large international structured credit facilities), negotiating changes to lending terms and conditions, developing documentation, making credit recommendations and obtaining all required approvals, and managing loans through insolvency proceedings, as required, in collaboration with legal counsel and/or external advisors.

We are looking for a motivated and seasoned professional who is keen to take on a new challenge and enhance their professional experience, gain a deep knowledge of how risk mitigants in loan structures play out in a workout scenario, and sharpen their skills in strategic thinking and complex negotiations.

What you will be doing:
  • Thoroughly understand all aspects of EDC's lending programs, including EDC's market position, risk appetite and related loan documentation.
  • Support/lead (as appropriate relative to file complexity) all aspects of restructuring and transaction management, loss mitigation assessments and recommendations, and internal communications.
  • Responsible for managing communications with borrowers, bankers, lawyers, receivers, trustees and advisors.
  • Deliver difficult messages and work to build consensus externally and internally.
  • Resolve issues that may arise with internal or external counterparties.
  • Where applicable, act as a resource, coach or mentor for colleagues with less experience.
  • Support the team with corporate initiatives or projects involving process improvements, governance, risk management practices, teambuilding and knowledge sharing.

What we are looking for:
  • Completion of an MBA or other post-graduate education in related disciplines, CPA or CFA.
  • Special Risks (Loans) 19: Minimum five years of experience in a special risks function or in commercial/corporate lending, structured or project financing, with demonstrated experience in negotiations, structuring, loan documentation, and security and credit analysis.
  • Special Risks (Loans) 20: Candidates with significant expertise in these areas and in-depth experience in complex structures will be considered for Level 20.

What will make you stand out:
  • Strong preference for bilingualism (English & French)
  • CFA designation
  • Spanish language skills or advance knowledge of other key international trading market languages

Eligibility:

EDC is dedicated to Fair Employment Practices. Applicants must be Canadian citizens or hold valid permanent residency cards at the time of application. Preference will be given to candidates who are legally able to work in Canada (Canadian Citizens or Permanent Residents). Candidates must also meet the government security screening requirements.

This position is open to individuals who meet all the essential criteria outlined above and submit their applications by the closing date. Ready to make a difference?
