Essential Duties

1.Lead interaction with current and prospective Yale faculty users to provide scientific computational expertise to enhance efficiency of research algorithms.2.Partner with faculty to obtain an in depth understanding of current and projected research needs, identify, design/determine, and implement enhancements to the daily operations of the Yale Center for Research Computing (YCRC).3.Identify, investigate and assess new computing technologies (in areas such as hardware, software, and networking) to meet needs of cutting edge research groups at Yale.4.Design and contribute advanced computational and scientific thought to the development of computational sections of faculty research proposals.5.Develop and deliver training programs, seminars, and other outreach activities to a diverse community of faculty, students, and others sharing a common interest.6.Utilize advanced science software to enhance their research program.

Required Education and Experience

Master's Degree in a scientific or computational field plus 6 years of academic or scientific industry experience or equivalent combination of education or experience.

Position Focus:

The Yale Center for Research Computing seeks a Senior Computational Research Support Analyst to join the Center's interdisciplinary Research Support group and to lead the support for Artificial Intelligence at the Center. Areas of concentration include GPU computing and tools, large language models, and neural networks. The position requires excellent communication skills, the ability to lead an AI-focused team and work within the larger Research Support team, juggle many simultaneous projects, and a can-do attitude. For candidates interested in research, the opportunity exists for extended collaboration with researchers up to 20% time.

This position involves leading a newly formed subgroup of the YCRC that is focused on AI and GPU computing. This group will be responsible for consulting with and advising users of the YCRC's services, who have a wide range of research interests and computational abilities (including faculty, postdocs, and graduate students). Yale is undertaking a major effort in Artificial Intelligence, both in terms of fundamental research as well as applications of AI. These initiatives and researchers will be a focus for this position. Accordingly, the YCRC expects to dramatically expand AI related resources, both hardware, in particular the latest GPUs, as well as growing the number of support positions within the YCRC.

The YCRC supports the entire University, including the Yale School of Medicine and the Faculty of Arts & Sciences and encompasses Yale's High Performance Computing (HPC) clusters with more than 40,000 cores, multiple petabytes of high-performance storage, and technologies for computational science and the analysis, sharing, and management of large-scale research data.

The successful candidate for this position will report to the Center's Director of Arts & Sciences Research Computing.

The Yale Center for Research Computing is a component of the Provost's Office, and is governed jointly by the Vice Provost for Research, the Deputy Dean(s) for Research at the Yale School of Medicine, and the University Vice President for Technology and Campus Services.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Advanced degree in a scientific field. Experience conducting independent research, leading a technical team, building and tuning AI systems, and with GPUs and HPC clusters.

AI tools: TensorFlow, Keras, PyTorch, LLMs

Computing languages: C, Python, Matlab, R

Software tools: Docker, Apptainer, Slurm, MPI, Jupyter, EasyBuild, conda

Teaching, workshops, consulting
