Job Summary

The Senior Director Spiritual Care has system-wide responsibility for ensuring response to the diverse spiritual needs of patients, their families and loved ones, as well as to those of our team members across the Novant Health footprint. This role will establish strategic direction for spiritual care and develop policies, processes and procedures to ensure consistency in practice and service quality, while respecting the unique cultures and resources of each region. The Sr Director will lead the continuing development of chaplains and oversees strategic direction and implementation of a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) residency program for educating future spiritual care professionals.

Essential functions:
  • Leadership: Provide consistent and fair oversight. Direct the delivery of services and programs to respond to the spiritual needs of patients, their loved ones and NH team members in accordance with Novant Health Cause statement as well as standards for the profession of healthcare chaplaincy. Direct and harmonize system-wide activities related to staffing, training, mentoring, and evaluating spiritual care professionals and spiritual care volunteers. Direct development of a Clinical Pastoral Education program to educate future spiritual care professionals and provide mentoring opportunities for NH pastoral care professionals. Direct spiritual care functions in the outpatient/community areas, including faith community nursing programs. Resolve complex problems and identify ways to continue to transform the work of spiritual care and CPE teams to align with system growth and evolving healthcare landscape.
  • Communication: Represent the vision of Novant Health spiritual care effectively with leaders, team members and the community. Create an environment that supports and respects the diverse spiritual and cultural needs of patients and team members. Collaborate with others, including community spiritual leaders, in providing services to meet diverse spiritual/religious/cultural needs. Assist in developing and delivering programs to enhance team member resilience and communication skills. Direct multimedia communication related to spiritual care (e.g., internal and external newsletters, podcasts, and web sites).
  • Business Acumen: Maintain organizational policies and procedures, including rules of conduct.
  • Quality Improvement: Apply process improvement principles as appropriate to spiritual care processes. Oversee collection and analysis of spiritual care data and translate data into actionable change. Monitor external learnings and best practices for consideration, explore opportunities for research, presentation of internal best practices, and publication of successes.
  • Customer Service: Ensure that spiritual care team members embody Novant Health service standards and assist with service recovery when needed. Collaborate in the development and delivery of programs and services aligned with spiritual care (e.g., Choices and Champions, clinical ethics, health equity, human experience programs).
  • Human Resources: Provide ongoing coaching and counseling to direct reports consistent with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Financial: Provide budget oversight for multiple cost centers. Manage program expenses and staffing to achieve quality, productivity, and budgetary targets. Identify opportunities to seek grant funding for innovation and growth, maintain key external relationships and foundation partnerships.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Graduate Degree from a school of divinity or theology, required.

Licensure/Certification:
  • Board certification by one of the following: APC, NACC, NAJC, or CPSP; required.
  • ACPE Certified Educator, preferred.

Experience:
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in a hospital spiritual care role, required.
  • Minimum two (2) years of leadership experience, preferred.

Additional Skills (required):
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills and group facilitation.
  • Experience with family and group dynamics.
  • Knowledge of diverse religious traditions and resources.
  • Ability to provide guidance, continuing education, and developmental feedback to spiritual care professionals.
  • Knowledge of process management and improvement, including staffing processes.

Additional Skills (preferred):
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate within a matrix structure having shared responsibility for resource allocation.
  • Experience with budget oversight.
  • Knowledge of research in the field of spiritual care and professional chaplaincy.
  • Knowledge of strategic planning processes and healthcare administration.
