Summary/Objective
Midwest Distribution, a leading vape distribution company, is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Senior Tax Analyst - Excise & Compliance - Regulated Products - Bensenville, IL to supervise compliance operations and lead excise tax reporting for regulated products. The ideal candidate has 7+ years of progressive experience in tax compliance, excise tax reporting, and multi-state filings, ideally with experience in highly regulated industries such as vape, tobacco, alcohol, or cannabis. This role plays a critical part in overseeing tax operations, ensuring regulatory compliance, and advising on strategic tax planning across jurisdictions. The ideal candidate also has advanced knowledge of federal and state tax laws, particularly in regulated industries such as tobacco, vape, alcohol, cannabis, or other excise-taxed products.

Tax Compliance Leadership
  • Lead preparation and filing of monthly, quarterly, and annual excise tax returns across all applicable jurisdictions.
  • Supervise the Compliance Associate and Compliance Officer in tax return preparation, rate maintenance, and documentation.
  • Oversee tax software use and ensure accurate configuration for multi-state requirements.
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly PACT Act reporting where required.

Strategic Tax Planning & Advisory
  • Monitor regulatory developments to proactively adjust tax strategies.
  • Provide guidance to management on excise tax implications related to new markets or products.
  • Participate in business planning and provide insights on tax optimization opportunities.
  • Maintain a tax risk register to track audit exposure, legislative shifts, and emerging compliance risks.

Audit & Regulatory Response
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for federal and state audits.
  • Compile and lead preparation of audit-ready documentation.
  • Develop and implement controls to minimize audit risks and resolve audit findings efficiently.
  • Coordinate quarterly mock audits to test and improve audit preparedness.

Excise Tax Oversight
  • Manage all excise tax compliance responsibilities across jurisdictions.
  • Ensure proper treatment of tax-exempt and taxable sales.
  • Coordinate with legal and compliance teams to support correct classification of tobacco/vape products.
  • Maintain accurate and compliant product tax classification mapping across SKUs and jurisdictions.

Cross-Department Collaboration
  • Work closely with accounting, compliance, legal, operations, ecommerce merchandising, development, purchasing, sales, and customer service teams to streamline tax processes.
  • Mentor the Compliance Associate and Compliance Officer.
  • Maintain accurate multi-jurisdictional tax calendars and filing schedules.
  • Host quarterly tax compliance workshops and maintain internal training materials.

Systems & Reporting Optimization
  • Collaborate with IT and data teams to improve tax data accuracy and system integrations.
  • Create and maintain dashboards to track tax exposure, refund opportunities, and filing metrics.
  • Provide tax-related summaries to executive leadership for strategic planning and reporting.

Competencies

Expertise in Multi-State Excise Tax Laws
  • Possesses in-depth knowledge of complex, multi-jurisdictional excise tax regulations, with the ability to interpret and apply them effectively across diverse business operations.

High-Volume Filing Management
  • Proven ability to manage and execute a large volume of tax filings within tight deadlines, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timeliness in fast-paced environments.

Audit Readiness & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Experienced in navigating tax audits with confidence and composure, while working closely with internal departments to ensure alignment and readiness across teams.

Strategic Mindset with Attention to Detail
  • Highly detail-oriented and organized, bringing a proactive approach and strategic thinking to every task-balancing precision with big-picture planning.

Advanced Excel Proficiency
  • Skilled in Microsoft Excel, including advanced formulas, pivot tables, and data modeling-leveraging spreadsheets to drive data analysis and reporting.

Tech-Savvy with Tax and Business Intelligence Tools
  • Comfortable working with industry-leading tools such as iGen, Salesforce, Power BI, and Tableau, integrating technology to streamline processes and enhance decision-making.

Strong Analytical and Communication Skills
  • Combines sharp analytical thinking with clear and confident communication-capable of turning complex data into actionable insights and collaborating effectively with stakeholders.

This position has supervisory responsibility.

Work Environment

This is an onsite position based at our headquarters in Bensenville, IL.

Physical Demands

This role requires frequent computer use and standard office work.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

Travel

Minimal travel may be required for interdepartmental training or state audits.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Taxation.
  • 7+ years of tax compliance experience; similar industry experience with a strong focus on compliance and excise tax.

Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Taxation or CPA certification.
  • Experience in highly regulated industries such as tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, or similar.

Work Authorization

Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
