Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Staff Engineer Systems Architect to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals within our Systems Engineering organization. This role is located in Melbourne, FL.

In this role, the successful candidate will utilize Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices for cross-IPT collaboration and future program capture within the Research & Advanced Design (R&AD) Division. The individual will develop system architectures and define key capabilities and performance requirements. The individual will define design and technology maturity constraints of the system in accordance with customer specifications, develop thorough definition of system external interfaces and define system implementation approach and operational concept. The candidate will ensure requirements are met and evaluate performance with customer.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and provide expert support to the entire Ground System segment technical team.
  • Lead and optimize Ground System design, processing, and mission success.
  • Troubleshoot and develop solutions to complex problems that the program may encounter.
  • Develop, author and/or provide input to major program data products and other deliverables.
  • Technical management of program elements
  • Plan and conduct of technical reviews and technical baseline
  • Write status and technical performance reviews and reports
  • Mentor, coach, train, guide, direct and advise junior staff
  • Able to recognize and mitigate technical issues and risks while operating within budget and on schedule.
  • The candidate will work with cross-discipline team members and must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work with a diverse community of engineers and managers to achieve the goals of the program team.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM) discipline AND 12 years of related professional/military experience OR a Master of Science degree in a STEM discipline AND 10 years of related professional/military experience, OR a STEM Ph.D. AND 8 years of related professional/military experience
  • Must have an active DoD Top Secret or higher clearance (with a background investigation completed within the last 6 years or currently enrolled into Continuous Evaluation).
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance within a reasonable amount of time as determined by business needs
  • Must have technical OR leadership experience in systems engineering and integration of Ground System systems, such as development, manufacture, test, or operations


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in Ground Systems Communications Hardware/Software and Aircraft Maintenance Systems Hardware/Software.
  • Active or current TS/SCI U.S. Government Security Clearance
  • Experience in system architecture & CONOPs development
  • Experience with Integration & Test of Ground System systems
  • Experience with various technical tools such as MATLAB, STK, CORE, DOORS, or CAMEO
  • Knowledge of SysML, and SysML v2.0
  • Experience working with industry consortium
  • Experience with Software Defined Infrastructure, and DevSecOps practices.


Salary Range: $147,700.00 - $221,500.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
