The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Materials Testing Laboratory provides field exploration, sampling, and technical support regarding the design, use, application, evaluation, and research associated with construction materials and maintains the Department's national accreditation with the American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) resource, ASTM International, and the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL) laboratory inspection programs.

Why does the job exist?

This position provides expertise to the NMDOT regarding concrete materials, admixtures, and mix designs. This position also supervises the Entry, Soils Testing, and Concrete Testing Units.

How does it get done?

The position will be responsible for the units that perform all tests on aggregates, concrete, soils and other materials associated with highway construction. The State Concrete Engineer will review and approve all concrete mix designs and adjustment requests to confirm compliance with department specifications and required performance properties for all construction projects within NMDOT. This position will work closely with Assistant District Engineers for Construction and Project Mangers from all six (6) districts in regard to soils testing and concrete issues and concerns.

The State Materials Bureau, The State Construction Bureau, Private Testing Laboratories, NMDOT Districts.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will preferred education and/or experience in the following:

* Construction specification interpretation and application.
* Highway construction.
* Construction material testing - ASTM and AASHTO Standards.
* Reviewing and approving concrete mix designs.
* Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory Accreditation Program.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and eight (8) years of engineering experience, four (4) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer and (2) years of experience in a supervisory/managerial role. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling twelve (12) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of conditioned employment.

Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical.

Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting. Exposure to: Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), extensive personal computer and phone usage. Communication with the general public and public agencies on a frequent basis. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to meet multiple deadlines. Occasional statewide and out of state travel maybe required.
