Blue Ridge Power (BRP) is seeking a Superintendent, Substation to join our team! The Superintendent, Substation, is responsible for supervising substation crews and the construction of electric substations. This role involves ensuring the safety and reliability of substation operations, managing personnel, and maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulations. This position is designated as a safety-sensitive position.

The Superintendent, Substation reports directly to the Senior Director, Substation Construction.

This position is 100% travel and offers per diem while working on our project sites. Site states include but are not limited to Maryland, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Virginia, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, Texas, Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina, etc.

What You'll Do:
  • Supervision and Leadership:
    • Oversee daily activities of substation crews.
    • Develop and implement training programs for staff.
    • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback.
    • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and procedures.
    • Engage with your work team to ensure we achieve zero injuries.
    • Supervise construction efforts to ensure the project is constructed following design, budget, and schedule.
    • Plan, coordinate, and supervise on-site functions (scheduling, engineering, material control, and may provide day-to-day directions of on-site administrative staff).
  • Operations and Maintenance:
    • Manage the installation of substation equipment.
    • Responsible for the oversight of all phases of substation construction on high and low voltage equipment, including but not limited to:
      • Reading and understanding schematic diagrams and construction drawings.
      • Construction of foundations, erecting structures, installation of buses, switches, breakers, transformers, voltage regulators, capacitors, circuit switchers, AC and DC secondary voltage systems, conduit and cable raceways, grounding systems, pulling and terminating of cable, installation of control metering and relay panels, etc.
      • Read, interpret, and understand civil, structural, equipment, one-line, three-line, schematic, and electrical drawings and installation manuals.
    • Verify that the most current drawing revisions are being used in the field.
    • Responsible for cost control and project scheduling.
    • Coordinate and supervise new construction projects.
    • Complete daily field reports and take daily pictures to document construction progress.
    • Develop and distribute project status reports both weekly and monthly.
    • Provides status reports and updates to the Project Manager.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues.
    • Maintain accurate records of daily activities and equipment status.
  • Safety and Compliance:
    • Observe, enforce, comply with, and promote BRP's Safety Program, rules, requirements, and corporate safety goals.
    • Participate in all safety-related processes, programs, and training, as requested.
    • Conduct regular safety inspections and audits.
    • Develop and implement safety training programs.
    • Respond to emergencies and ensure proper safety measures are in place.
    • Cooperate and work with the Safety Department to ensure safety incidents are investigated openly and honestly.
  • Communication and Coordination:
    • Liaise with other departments and external partners.
    • Collaborate with project management to develop and implement project procedures, working documents, and standards.
    • Communicate technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
    • Interface with client representatives, A/E representatives, other contractors, etc., under the supervision of the Construction Manager and Project Manager.
    • Prepare reports and documentation related to substation construction.

Must-Haves:
  • 8+ years of Construction experience.
  • 3+ years in a Superintendent/Leadership capacity working on Substation projects, operations, and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of substation construction and crew control.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electric system components and related communications and protection functions.
  • Familiar with construction equipment, including skid steers, man lifts, boom trucks, forklifts, backhoes, and trenchers.
  • Familiar with and proficient in using MS Office Suite, Procore, HeavyJob, Adobe, and other industry-related software.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze performance, process improvements, and standardization activities.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction management processes, means, and methods.
  • Demonstrated practical leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, and developing employees in a team environment.
  • Ability to lead and communicate effectively with crew.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Must understand electrical hazards associated with transmission and distribution voltages within substation construction.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety standards and regulations.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to plan and see the "big picture"
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Nice-to-Haves:
  • Utility-scale solar or renewable energy industry experience.

Education and Certifications:
  • Diploma/certificate from High School or GED - required.
  • Valid Journeyman certification or equivalent experience to provide the skills necessary to perform the work of a Journeyman Substation Technician - required.
  • Must possess and maintain a current valid driver's license - required.
  • Must have Class A or B CDL or ability to obtain one - required.
  • Lineman certification - preferred.

Working Environment and Physical Demands:
  • This position is 100% travel and offers per diem while working on our project site(s).
  • The position requires travel to our project site(s).
  • Must possess reliable transportation.
  • Able to travel for extended periods to various locations.
  • Be on time and ready to work at the start of each standard shift.
  • Must be able to comply with all company safety standards and procedures, including OSHA requirements.
  • Must always wear personal protective equipment. (i.e., Hard hats, safety glasses, safety harnesses, ear protection, fire retardant clothing, as required) and respirators when required.
  • Must follow organization policies and procedures.
  • Individuals in this position work in an outdoor environment and must be able to tolerate all climates.
  • Must be able to sit, stoop, kneel, bend, stand, or walk short to long distances for 8-10 hours daily.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally.
