Under direction, to train and supervise the work of Staff Respiratory Care Practitioners on an assigned shift; to plan, develop and present a continuing education program in the principles and techniques of administering respiratory care procedures; to implement clinical experience plans for respiratory care students; and to perform respiratory care services.

O'Connor Hospital - O'Connor Hospital (OCH) is a 358 licensed bed acute care facility offering a full range of inpatient and outpatient medical, surgical and specialty programs to residents of Santa Clara County. It was founded in 1889 as one of the first hospitals in the county. OCH has grown significantly over the past five years in both its inpatient volume and its Emergency Department visits. Along with these volume increases other ancillary and clinical departments like imaging, lab, pharmacy, and respiratory have seen growth as well.
St. Louise Regional Hospital - Since 1989, St. Louise Regional Hospital (SLRH) has been caring for the residents in Santa Clara and San Benito Counties, offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient medical specialties. SLRH has 93 beds, is a Designated Primary Stroke Center, and is the only acute care hospital in the area. Located in Gilroy, SLRH maintains a CALSTAR 2 emergency helicopter base on the premises.

Typical Tasks
- Trains and supervises assigned staff;
- Schedules and makes work assignments to Respiratory Care Personnel;
- Counsels staff and students;
- Maintains work flow and reassigns subordinates as necessary;
- Makes rounds to review work of practitioners to insure compliance with physicians' orders and to maintain quality of work performed;
- Acts as liaison with nursing staff and physicians during shift;
- Through consultation with the Chief Respiratory Care Practitioner, Staff Practitioners and Hospital Administration evaluates training needs and develops a continuing education program for practitioners and other hospital staff;
- Conducts inservice training on a group level as well as assisting individuals to achieve their personal educational goals;
- Provides orientation training for new staff;
- Prepares, administers and evaluates examinations for staff and students;
- Maintains and up-dates procedures manuals;
- Serves as resource to other divisions and assists them with their continuing education needs in the field of respiratory care;
- Evaluates new equipment and trains staff in its use;
- Develops and maintains training and performance records and prepares reports;
- Administers respiratory care treatments in emergency and urgent situations;
- Performs routine respiratory care procedures and assists in patient care as required by workload;
- Anticipates needs and provides services in a courteous, sensitive, responsive and efficient manner;
- Performs related work as required.

Sufficient education, training, and increasingly responsible clinical experience as a respiratory care practitioner in a critical care setting, including training or experience in developing and presenting education programs, which demonstrates possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities.
Knowledge of:
- Principles of supervision, training and administration;
- Principles, methods and techniques of administering sustaining gases and their effect on the human body;
- Anatomy, physiology, physics, chemistry, mathematics and pharmacology pertinent to respiratory care;
- Clinical applications of gas, humidity and aerosol therapy, positive pressure breathing treatments, assisted and controlled mechanical ventilation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and chest physical therapy;
- Teaching methods and practices;
- Sterilization, microbiology and infection control measures;
- Uses, care and maintenance of equipment used in respiratory care;
- Infection control measures.
Ability to:
- Schedule and supervise the work of others;
- Train others in the principles, methods and techniques of respiratory care procedures;
- Identify training needs;
- Work with a variety of technical and clinical variables;
- Apply medical theory to the practice of respiratory care;
- Analyze clinical patient information and make proper decisions regarding level and priority of treatments;
- Select proper equipment to perform normal and emergency procedures;
- Communicate with patients, staff and the public from varying educations, technical and cultural backgrounds;
