JOB PURPOSE:
Serving as mentor and team leader for staff radiation therapists, coordinating completion of weekly chart
checks, organizing and maintaining an appropriate inventory of treatment supplies, maintaining patient
treatment schedule, participating in quality improvement initiatives, assisting in the implementation of new
technology. Provides quality clinical care throughout the radiation oncology sites.

Qualifications:
MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:
Graduate of an ARRT accredited radiation therapy program. Registration in radiation therapy with the
American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. CPR certified.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Minimum of five years of experience as a radiation therapist, three years in a leadership role.

MINIMUM LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW:
None.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor of Science degree preferred.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assists Manager with supervision of performance and timekeeping for assigned staff.

2. Manages cost and finances, together with the Manager, responsible for creating and managing
annual budget and specific targets. Maintains reconciliation process to ensure revenue is
captured.

3. Maintains safe work environment and culture, promotes excellence in patient care.

4. Serves as a resource to the staff supervised and the organization at large.
a. Maintains current knowledge of Radiation Oncology trends, processes and procedures utilized
in the industry.
b. Provides support via education/assistance during the introduction of new processes or
procedures.
c. Exhibits accountability for accreditation or regulatory agency readiness by actively leading
appropriate teams.

5. Maintains current knowledge of regulatory standards per DNV, etc., applies expectations to the
development of processes, and ensures compliance.

6. Together with the Manager, maintains safe work environment and culture, promotes excellence in
patient care. Manages quality patient care and quality patient outcomes. Coordinate quality
initiatives and process improvement strategies that improve unit based and hospital based
scorecards.

7. Assists Manager with patient chart and charge posting/exporting review processes to ensure
accuracy of documentation and billing.

8. Trains, schedules and mentors radiation therapists.
a. Schedules radiation therapists to ensure a minimum of two radiation therapists are present
for all weekday patient treatments.
b. Provides therapists with a rotating shift schedule in a timely manner.
c. Maintains the therapist on-call schedule.
d. Provides therapists with adequate training on new technology.
e. Holds regularly scheduled lead therapist meetings which foster team participation and group
problem solving.
f. Creates a training plan for all new therapists and regularly assesses performance.
g. Assists manager as needed to provide annual performance evaluation and semi-annual
performance review session.

9. Delivers safe and accurate radiation therapy treatments.
a. Administers prescribed radiation treatments to patients precisely, efficiently and according to
standardized or recommended techniques.
b. Checks chart for patients diagnosis, prescribed dose, daily tumor dose, any specific
instructions regarding the patients treatment status, and/or adjustments to the radiation dose
prior to initiating treatment.
c. Maintains constant visual and audible communication with patient during treatment at all
times.
d. Ensures that ARIA information management system and radiation therapy treatment record
are identical.
e. Maintains patient markings and tattoos patients according to established guidelines.
f. Obtains ID photos, setup and field photos of treatment area for the medical record.
g. Images patients in accordance with physician prescription and department protocol.
h. Positions patient in an accurate and consistent manner.
i. Assists patient on and off the table and adheres to hospital patient safety guidelines.
j. Identifies patient via two forms of identification prior to each treatment.
k. Provides physicians and physicists feedback on challenging patient set-ups.

10. Performs radiation therapy simulations.
a. Utilizes standardized or recommended techniques for immobilization.
b. Performs CT/Simulations accurately and documents information appropriately.
c. Recognizes the need to re-evaluate a patient set up technique.
d. Assists with the development of precise and reproducible techniques for simulations.
e. Prepares or assists with the production of molds, casts, custom blocks or other beam
modifying devices.
f. Safely administers contrast.
g. Provides appropriate education to patient and family and confirms pre-treatment paperwork is
completed.
h. Checks for a signed consent and physician intent before starting procedure.

11. Schedules and coordinates patients treatments.
a. Schedules patients for radiation treatments while taking into consideration machine
utilization, staffing and patients needs.
b. Assists with the scheduling of CT/simulations assuring that they are performed in a timely
manner.
c. Schedules patients for treatment planning of boost fields as directed by the treatment
prescription.
d. Schedules patients for the appropriate activity codes.
e. Enters and schedules appropriate care paths in Aria.
f. Works with radiation therapists to resolve patient scheduling conflicts.

12. Performs quality control functions.
a. Prepares patient and rooms for treatment to ensure safety and privacy and administers
prescribed radiation dosages to patients undergoing therapeutic treatments.
b. Correctly performs the calculation of patient dosage for emergency/on-call treatments.
c. Performs daily warm ups on linear accelerators and simulators. Evaluates all variations
found and reports such variations to physics.
d. Serves on the continuous quality improvement committee.
e. Shows competence in Radiation Safety by following policies and procedure regarding the use
of personnel dosimetry and safe use of hazardous equipment.
f. Consistently documents machine faults appropriately on the machine error log.
g. Notifies physicist immediately of any machine malfunctions.
h. Monitors minor machine faults and reports any trends to physics.

13. Serves as leader for treatment delivery team.
a. Ensures completion of weekly chart checks.
b. Provides radiation therapists with constructive performance feedback on a regular basis.
c. Coordinates therapists breaks based on volumes and machine schedule.
d. Assists with the launch of new technologies.
e. Assists physicist with quarterly film badges as needed.
f. Assist in appropriate dissemination of information.
j. Represents therapists at department meetings.
k. Effectively handles differing viewpoints in an objective and diplomatic manner.

14. Communicates with others/colleagues.
a. Establishes a good working relationship with Radiation Oncology Services team members,
other hospital personnel, vendors, and physicians.
b. Maintains a positive attitude and demonstrates a willingness to adapt to change.
c. Performs appropriately in an emergency and/or difficult situation by remaining calm, notifying
the appropriate personnel, and initiating the appropriate action.
d. Provides positive, supportive communication to patients, families and visitors.
e. Maintains good working relationship with physicians.
f. Communicates wait times to patients if delayed more than 10 minutes after the scheduled
appointment.
g. Utilizes the components of AIDET when communicating with patients.
h. Seeks ways to improve patient satisfaction scores.

15. Cultivates an environment that adheres to best clinical and safety practices.
a. Maintains the department to meet criteria set forth by the Joint Commission, OSHA and ACR.
b. Assists physics, administration and physicians with special projects.
c. Immediately alerts director and physicist to any safety concerns.
