Job Description
Job Title: Surgical Technologist

Experience: One year of experience in a surgical setting preferred, specialty field experience preferred
License: N/A
Certifications: Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association, Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBTSTSA), or Certification as a Tech in Surgery from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). For positions in Colorado, registration with the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA) as a surgical technologist is required unless performing functions within the scope of another clinical Colorado license, certification, or registration.
Must-Have: Basic computer skills, proficiency in English (speak, read, write)

Job Description:

- Work under the supervision of the surgeon and RN to assist the surgical team during operative procedures by arranging and inventorying sterile setup of instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical cases, and passing items to surgeons and nurses as needed.
- Prepare and move patients, and sterilize and clean instruments, equipment, and rooms.
- Use physician preference cards to identify supplies and equipment needed for scheduled or emergency procedures and update preference cards with any necessary changes.
- Set up sterile tables with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedures.
- Prepare solutions and medications, properly label them, and report amounts used for charting.
- Prepare back tables and mayo stands, anticipating the needs of the surgeon through the use of preference cards.
- Provide supplies or equipment upon request for the surgeon, nurses, and/or anesthesiologist.
- Assist with draping the sterile field and drape and cover operating and instrument tables.
- Perform appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the operation, before the incision is closed, and as needed.
- Deliver surgical specimens/cultures from the operative field to the circulating nurse.
- Maintain the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures by checking package integrity, indicators, and opening procedures.
- Prepare and sterilize supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures.
- Review and replace supplies in the surgical case following procedures and discard expired medications per protocol.
- Assist with terminal cleaning of the operating room, put away equipment, supplies, and instruments as required, and assist in prepping the room for the next patient.
- Hold retractors or instruments, sponges, or suctions operative site, apply electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cut suture material, connect drains to suction apparatus, and apply dressings to a wound.
- Provide on-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours per department and/or facility policy.
- Communicate effectively with the surgeon and nursing staff.
- Anticipate possible problems or complications during cases, adjust quickly, and prepare for emergent cases that change workflow.
- Perform all duties conscientiously, courteously, and in a caring manner to maintain positive customer relations.
- Maintain efficiency under stress and with irregular working hours.
- Adhere to department procedures and acceptable protocols.
- Apply knowledge of the dress code related to Standard Precautions and consistently wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Report any life safety issues, environmental concerns, or process deviations to an immediate supervisor.
- Participate in quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and research activities.
- Engage in professional and program development by attending department in-services, meetings, and sharing professional expertise to enhance the quality of patient care and staff development. Seek specialty service learning opportunities and growth for advancement.
- Assist with the education of new staff and students.
- Demonstrate effective time management and proactively prioritize workload and meet productivity requirements.
- Adapt to rapidly changing technologies, policies, regulations, census, and staffing through priority setting and flexibility.

Note: Floating may be required to any location within sixty miles of the original assignment location or identified float zone. Float assignments may include duties outside of original assignment job requirements (including skill set) in accordance with policy.
