Description:
Job Summary: The Surgical Technician provides assistance and support to surgeons by preparing and providing instruments and equipment during surgical procedures in the operating room.
They work under the supervision of the surgeon and facilitate a safe, effective, and orderly operating room environment to maximize patient safety.
Essential Duties:
Demonstrates ability to problem-solve in relation to the procedure being performed.
Maintains current knowledge of various equipment, procedures, and supplies.
Adheres to proper surgical procedures, aseptic technique, and safety in the use of instruments and equipment.
Performs instrument counts prior to each procedure and maintains an accurate count of sponges, needles, and instruments during the procedure.
Secures and prepares all supplies and instruments required for surgical intervention before procedures.
Ensures the preparation and maintenance of the sterile field in the operating room.
Prepares patient skin for surgical treatment.
Positions and re-positions patient during surgery.
Helps monitor patients during surgery.
Provides supportive care during the pre-operative phase.
Performs scrub functions.
Ensures that specimens are correctly handled and routed to the proper source.
Maintains current knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medications used intraoperatively.
Keeps current with developments in the field through participation in seminars, workshops, and publications.
Follows all federal, state, and departmental safety procedures.
Preferred Skills:
Experience in orthopedics, ENT, and/or vascular surgery is a plus.
Experience with Epic software is preferred but not required, as on-site training will be provided.
Required Education:
High school diploma or GED.
Short-term training in an operating room setting or graduation from a surgical technician certification program from an accredited school or training program is required.
Preferred Education:
None specified.
Preferred Certifications & Licensure:
Certified Surgical Technicians (CST) through NBSTSA or Tech in Surgery certification from NCCT is preferred.
